Aaron Philo Named Week 1 Starter for Florida
Florida quarterback Aaron Philo will start for Florida in the Week 1 game against Florida Atlantic, according to head coach Jon Sumrall. The sophomore is entering his first year with the Gators after following offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech to Gainesville, and he has apparently won the QB1 competition against Tramell Jones Jr. Philo appeared in eight games for the Yellow Jackets over the last two seasons, completing 59 of 102 passing attempts for 938 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has 16 career rushing attempts for 95 yards and one touchdown. While it's tough to know what to expect out of Philo given his limited playing time, his comfort and experience in Faulkner's system should give him a chance to succeed right away. Florida has a talented wide receiver room headlined by Eric Singleton Jr., Dallas Wilson, and Vernell Brown III, but expect its offense to be run through star running back Jadan Baugh, especially to begin the year. The Gators open the season against FAU and Campbell before a Week 3 road trip to Auburn.
