Quincy Milton III predicts every NFL starting running back for the 2026 season in his power rankings. Following the Super Bowl, who will start for each team in 2026?
2026 is a great year for free-agent running backs. With a weaker-than-usual draft class and a stronger-than-usual free-agent class, we may see some huge contracts handed out to free-agent backs. Breece Hall, Kenneth Walker III, and Travis Etienne Jr. headline the group of players who could be on the move.
Two years ago, we were treated to a major running back free-agent class that featured Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, and Josh Jacobs. All three players went on to have huge seasons the following year. Those three players are truly elite, but it would be fun to witness a similar outcome in 2026.
Running back landing spots are difficult to predict because of the rise of running back committees, but let’s dive in and see who each team may be starting in Week 1 of the 2026 season.

32. Devin Neal - New Orleans Saints
The Saints have hitched their wagon to Alvin Kamara by continuing to throw money at him. However, Kamara’s efficiency has been dropping rapidly with each passing year. Devin Neal had a nice audition for the Saints in 2025. He may very well be the No. 1 back in a committee in 2026.
31. Trey Benson - Arizona Cardinals
Trey Benson had a chance to take over this backfield for good in 2025 when James Conner went down with an injury. Unfortunately, Benson would miss 13 games with his own injury. For this exercise, we have placed some of the top free-agent running backs on other teams, so let's move forward with Benson as the Cardinals’ No. 1 in 2026, even with a potentially healthy Conner.
30. Tyler Allgeier - Houston Texans
The situation with Joe Mixon in Houston is strange. It is unclear if Mixon is going to play football again. Additionally, Woody Marks was a nice rookie in 2025, but he profiles as a committee back. The Texans could shore up their backfield by going with a budget option. Allgeier will not fetch a massive contract on the open market, but he does have the talent to be the No. 1 back in a committee backfield. This would be a fun landing spot.
29. Chuba Hubbard - Carolina Panthers
Although he was less effective in 2025, Chuba Hubbard seems poised to retain his job with Rico Dowdle heading into free agency. Given how Hubbard’s production dipped in 2025, the Panthers will need to have a quality No. 2 option. That could come in the form of Trevor Etienne, who is entering Year 2.
28. Tony Pollard - Tennessee Titans
Tony Pollard is still under contract in Tennessee and will likely lead the backfield in offensive coordinator Brian Daboll’s system. However, the Titans would be smart to add a No. 2 back, whether it be in free agency or the draft. A player like Tyler Allgeier could be a nice addition.
27. Rico Dowdle - New York Jets
This feels like a spot that a player like Rico Dowdle could end up. The Jets will need a running back with Breece Hall likely departing, and Braelon Allen never separating himself as a difference-maker. Dowdle is a quality back, and he will be affordable. He is not going to be able to compete for top money in a market saturated with high-end talent. New York could also be his best bet for a backfield to himself.
26. RJ Harvey - Denver Broncos
Although it sounds like J.K. Dobbins may be returning to this backfield, the reins seem likely to be turned over to RJ Harvey. After Dobbins left the lineup with an injury, Harvey was the guy. He did not exactly separate himself, but he made enough big plays to earn a big role.
25. Aaron Jones Sr. - Minnesota Vikings
Aaron Jones will likely lead the Vikings backfield for one more year. He is still effective and has largely been able to stay healthy in his two seasons in Minnesota. It feels highly likely that the Vikings will add to this backfield in 2026, but with a fair amount of money tied up with Jones, they won't break the bank at the position.
24. Ashton Jeanty - Las Vegas Raiders
Ashton Jeanty did not live up to his hype heading into the 2025 season. However, he was playing behind the league’s worst offensive line with some of the worst quarterback play as well. Perhaps Jeanty can make some noise in Year 2 with new head coach Klint Kubiak bringing his excellent running scheme to town.

23. Jeremiyah Love - Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs do not have the cap space to sign a player like Breece Hall, but they have a glaring need at the position. Jeremiyah Love is a true difference-maker at running back. Kansas City may have the opportunity to draft him at No. 9 in April. Wouldn’t this be a fun landing spot?
22. Cam Skattebo - New York Giants
New York will likely add a back to this offense to pair with Skattebo, but the youngster has certainly earned himself the starting gig. He will be coming off a serious ankle injury, so expect a slow start from Skattebo.
21. Quinshon Judkins - Cleveland Browns
A second-round rookie, Quinshon Judkins, stepped into the Browns lineup and took over. This kid is brimming with talent, and he should anchor the Browns’ running game for years to come.
20. Jaylen Warren - Pittsburgh Steelers
Jaylen Warren finally had the backfield all to himself in 2025, only to see Kenneth Gainwell enter the fold and eat into his workload. Gainwell is a free agent, but the Steelers may very well have him back, and we may not get to see Warren in a workhorse role.
19. Omarion Hampton - Los Angeles Chargers
Omarion Hampton should return as a healthy workhorse in 2026. With new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel entering the fold, the Chargers’ running scheme is likely to take a huge step forward. Hampton will be the main beneficiary.
18. Breece Hall - Washington Commanders
With very few clear workhorse jobs available, Breece Hall could slot in nicely in Washington. The Commanders are in dire need of a difference-maker at running back. Hall may not have lived up to the hype he had coming into the league, but he would help transform this offense.

17. Travis Etienne Jr. - Jacksonville Jaguars
Travis Etienne Jr. responded to a lot of criticism with perhaps the best season of his career. He was a touchdown machine, instrumental to the Jaguars’ turnaround. Although Bhayshul Tuten got some run in 2025, can Jacksonville really let Etienne walk out the door?
16. D'Andre Swift/Kyle Monangai - Chicago Bears
D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai formed a great tandem over the second half of the 2025 season. These two players are the Sonic and Knuckles of the Chicago version of head coach Ben Johnson’s offense. In Year 2 of Johnson’s tenure, expect a big year from both players.

15. Javonte Williams - Dallas Cowboys
Javonte Williams wants to be in Dallas, and Dallas wants him there. Williams’ performance in 2025 earned him quite a bit of money, but it seems like the two sides should be able to find a way to work out a deal.
14. Rhamondre Stevenson/TreVeyon Henderson - New England Patriots
The Rhamondre Stevenson/TreVeyon Henderson combination could be lethal in 2026. Stevenson enjoyed a resurgent season in 2025 in which he looked nimble and in shape. Henderson came alive as a rookie in the second half of the season. This will be a one-two punch to watch in 2026.
13. Chase Brown - Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals are strange in how they conduct contract negotiations, but it sounds like they would like to work out an extension with Chase Brown. Either way, this is likely going to be his backfield for one more season. The guy is a great checkdown option for quarterback Joe Burrow and a touchdown machine.
12. Bucky Irving - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bucky Irving missed a lot of time in 2025. His absence proved his importance to the Buccaneers offense. Irving will enter Year 3 with a chance for massive production if Tampa Bay can get right on offense.
11. Kyren Williams/Blake Corum - Los Angeles Rams
The Rams have found themselves a great tandem. Blake Corum proved to be a home-run-hitting running back in 2025, with Kyren Williams providing steady production. Both guys will factor into the team’s 2026 plans.
10. Kenneth Walker III - Seattle Seahawks
Kenneth Walker III earned himself a lot of money during the 2025 playoffs. The reigning Super Bowl MVP had the backfield to himself with Zach Charbonnet out with a torn ACL.
Ahead of his free agency, Walker has publicly stated that he would like to be in Seattle. He may have priced himself out of Seattle, but it feels like both sides would like to make this work. If he returns, he will be a true workhorse until Charbonnet is fully healthy.

9. Saquon Barkley - Philadelphia Eagles
After receiving nearly 500 touches in 2024, Barkley’s production substantially dropped in 2025. Barkley’s drop in production can be attributed in part to wear on his body, but the Eagles offense as a whole took a massive step back. Barkley may get back on track in 2026, but he is not getting any younger.
8. Derrick Henry - Baltimore Ravens
Derrick Henry continued to dominate when given the opportunity in 2025. He seems to be aging like a fine wine, and the end is not necessarily in sight.
7. Josh Jacobs - Green Bay Packers
Josh Jacobs continues to get the job done in Green Bay. Running behind a quality offensive line with a good play-caller, Jacobs has thrived.
6. Jonathan Taylor - Indianapolis Colts
Jonathan Taylor was off to a monumental start in 2025. Unfortunately, injuries to quarterback Daniel Jones and an overall slowdown for Indianapolis caused Taylor to falter down the stretch. Still, Taylor is one of the most athletic and explosive players in the league. He should bounce back.
5. De'Von Achane - Miami Dolphins
De’Von Achane cemented himself as a superstar in 2025. Achane can score from anywhere, catch the ball, and run through the tackles effectively. Miami does not project to be a very good offense in 2026. As such, it will likely heavily rely on Achane’s services.
4. Christian McCaffrey - San Francisco 49ers
There is not much to say about Christian McCaffrey. He is still one of the best running backs in the league, even as he enters his 30s. However, that age cliff is getting closer. At some point, McCaffrey’s production will fall off.
3. Jahmyr Gibbs - Detroit Lions
This truly became the Jahmyr Gibbs show in 2025. Gibbs received a heavy dose of carries and was primarily the starting running back. This situation may balance out some in 2026, but Gibbs is too good to keep off the field very much.
2. James Cook III - Buffalo Bills
James Cook cemented himself as one of the best running backs in the league in 2025. He proved that his 16-touchdown 2024 season was no fluke. With new head coach Joe Brady creating continuity in Buffalo, Cook should continue to shine.
1. Bijan Robinson - Atlanta Falcons
Bijan Robinson is now the best running back in the league. He can do it all. As a running back, he is powerful yet explosive. As a wide receiver, he is elusive and an excellent route runner. The Falcons have wasted the first three years of Robinson’s career.
