John discusses 3 big-name players that are safe to cut for fantasy football ahead of Week 8 (2025). He recommends players you should drop to the waiver wire.
The absolute most miserable type of players to have rostered in fantasy football are those who occasionally put up big games, but have so many poor performances that you don't know when you can trust starting them. They end up clogging your bench for long periods of time.
Additionally, when you are forced into starting them, they have such low floors at times that they lose you matchups on their own. Goose egg performances, where a player scores 0.0 PPR fantasy points, aren't that uncommon, even for players that are considered to be good.
The danger in starting these players is high, and ironically, they might benefit you more by being in another team's starting lineup, because they have so much potential to be duds. So which three players are the biggest must-drops for Week 8?

Jameson Williams, WR, Detroit Lions
Williams has been putrid for fantasy football this season. It's wild to think that he'd be a better overall asset for fantasy football if he hadn't had two big games so far this year. He put up 18.8 and 18.6 PPR fantasy points in Week 2 and Week 6, but was absolutely horrid, on average, in his other games.
Jameson Williams averages outside of Week 2 and Week 6:
+1.8 receptions
+23 receiving yards
+0 Touchdowns
+4.1 PPR points per gameGenuinely better off on someone else's roster. The chance that he loses them their matchup is better than the risk of you missing his good games

His totals are simply abysmal when he isn't having one of his boom games. And ironically, in his best game this season, he was only targeted twice -- he just took those two receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown. It doesn't seem like this offense is making him a priority at all after his breakout 2024 campaign.
Former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is now the head coach of the Chicago Bears, and the team's new OC, John Morton, has made WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta the team's primary pass-catching weapons. The running backs have had plenty of receiving work, too.
It's a bit baffling, because Detroit just signed him to a massive extension in the offseason. It made sense to expect him to continue to be heavily involved in the offense. But that's just not the case. And he could have a few nice games moving forward, but the risk is just too great.

Detroit is leaning into St. Brown's greatness, and it's not a surprise. He's incredible, and incredibly consistent.
Jerry Jeudy, WR, Cleveland Browns
Jeudy is playing for the Browns. And he's not that great of a receiver. These two factors combined tell most of the story that needs to be told -- he's just not a good fantasy asset, and hasn't been since quarterback Jameis Winston was elevating this team's pass-catchers.
Jeudy was thought to be set to step into the team's clear WR1 role after the injury to WR Cedric Tillman (hamstring), who was place on injured reserve. That hasn't really happened, and regardless, Cleveland's passing game has been one of the worst in the league this year.
Jerry Jeudy without Jameis Winston since 2024:
+16 games
+124 Targets
+61 Catches
+683 Yards
+1 Touchdown
+8.4 PPR FPts per gameWinston still has people hung up on this guy but he is garbage for fantasy and not great in real life football either

Third-round rookie selection, quarterback Dillon Gabriel, is the team's current starting signal-caller. He's been underwhelming through two contests, and besides, it looks like he prefers targeting the team's tight ends. TE Harold Fannin Jr. has a bit of upside. Jeudy does not.
Yet the former Denver Broncos WR is still rostered in 73 percent of fantasy leagues after Week 7. That doesn't make a lot of sense -- he's never someone you want to have in your starting lineup, and his production is so low that you're better off hunting free-agent pickups, like Atlanta Falcons WR Darnell Mooney (hamstring) for their much higher ceilings.
Keon Coleman, WR, Buffalo Bills
The Coleman breakout probably isn't ever happening, according to my analysis. I was low on him coming out of college because of his separation issues. He struggles massively creating space between he and defensive backs that aren't playing off-coverage.
Coleman's route-running simply isn't polished. He's a big-bodied, tall receiver that has to rely heavily on contested catches to have decent production. There aren't a lot of players that excel in that archetype in the NFL -- you simply have to have a good ability to separate from coverage in some capacity.
At this point, you could make the case that Coleman is the fifth-best pass-catching player on his team, behind Khalil Shakir, James Cook, Dalton Kincaid (oblique), and Josh Palmer. And two of those players aren't even wide receivers.
