Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 8:
Rhamondre Stevenson, RB, Patriots
New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson has solidified himself as the clear workhorse in the backfield. Through seven games, Stevenson has totaled 69 carries for 245 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 15 receptions for 154 yards through the air. He showcased his trademark power running style in Week 7, rumbling for 88 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries against the Tennessee Titans. Many expected rookie TreVeyon Henderson to see an expanded role following Antonio Gibson's season-ending knee injury, but that hasn't materialized.
Over the last two games, Stevenson has dominated the workload, playing 77% of the snaps, compared to Henderson's 15%. While Stevenson remains the lead back, fantasy managers should still proceed with caution, as any given week could feature a change in the backfield rotation, especially with the team's second-round investment in Henderson. For Week 8, Stevenson projects as a high-end RB3 against the Cleveland Browns, who boast one of the toughest run defenses in the league.
Keenan Allen, WR, Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen had a huge day in his team's Week 7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, recording 11 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown on 14 targets. Allen was one of the beneficiaries of the Chargers' high-volume passing day, as Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert attempted 55 passes.
The 33-year-old Allen has now hauled in 44 receptions for 435 yards and four touchdowns on 65 targets across seven games this season. With Los Angeles currently playing without its top running back, Omarion Hampton (ankle), the team could continue to find itself in pass-heavy game scripts. That would be a recipe for fantasy success for Allen and the rest of the Chargers' pass-catchers. Los Angeles will have a short week in Week 8, as they play the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night.
Jordan Mason, RB, Vikings
Running back Jordan Mason has had the run of the Minnesota Vikings backfield in the past few weeks, but his workload will be worth monitoring as Aaron Jones Sr. (hamstring) is now eligible to come off Injured Reserve. The Vikings initially were targeting Week 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers, a Thursday night game, to bring back Jones, but so far, they have not officially activated him.
Mason has been decent if not great in Jones' absence, but it's worth noting that four of five starters on the offensive line have been impacted by injuries, and starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy has missed four straight games. Mason may have another week in the lead role, but Jones is likely to play a factor when he returns.
Stefon Diggs, WR, Patriots
New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs handled seven targets last Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, catching all seven passes for 69 yards. He had his second-highest catch total of the season despite playing just 54 percent of the snaps. Drake Maye is good at spreading the ball around, but Diggs has been a true constant within the offense, catching at least six passes in four of his last seven games. He has impressed as the overall WR26 in PPR leagues, pushing into high-end flex territory.
His value could take a step back this week, though, as the Patriots are already getting ready to take on the Cleveland Browns in Week 7. The Browns have a good defense all around, lowering Diggs' floor and ceiling this week. He should be treated as a WR3/flex with upside.
Troy Franklin, WR, Broncos
Denver Broncos wide receiver Troy Franklin saw 10 targets in Sunday's 33-32 comeback win over the New York Giants to tie with counterpart wide receiver Courtland Sutton for the most on the team. In what was a dramatic comeback win for the Broncos, as they were shut out for the first three quarters, Franklin caught their first offensive touchdown as it ricocheted off a defender's hands that was guarding the primary target, Sutton, into his hands for the score.
Franklin would only catch two more passes other than that one on the day, leaving him with three catches for 19 yards and a score for the day. While the target count is encouraging, Franklin will look to improve his efficiency next week against the Dallas Cowboys at home.
