Time to Drop Chris Godwin? Fantasy Football Week 7 Waiver Wire Outlook (2025)

Chris Godwin - Fantasy Football Rankings, NFL Injuries, DFS

Should I drop Chris Godwin for fantasy football Week 7? Is Chris Godwin a safe player to cut? Read the fantasy football waivers outlook.

If you've been holding on to Chris Godwin this season, you're probably at the point where patience has run out. He was supposed to bounce back this year after an injury-derailed 2024 season. Instead, he's been bitten by the injury bug yet again.

Fantasy football can be a cruel game sometimes. One year, a guy can be a lock in your starting lineup. And the next, you're stuck living in the past (hoping the player can return to form).

That's where we are with Godwin. Between recurring injuries and new competition, his fantasy outlook gets more unstable every day. So, is it finally time to say goodbye? Let's check out Godwin's current situation and identify which players are worth an add this week.

Should I Drop Chris Godwin in Fantasy Football?

All season, managers have waited for Godwin to get back to his old ways, but it isn't happening. After dislocating his ankle and fracturing his fibula in 2024, he saw his first action of 2025 in Week 4.

He played in just two contests before going down again with a different fibula injury. The Buccaneers have already ruled him out for Week 7, and there's no return timetable on the horizon.

The frustrating part is that managers have held on to him for this long because they know what he can do when he's healthy. Godwin has four 1,000-yard campaigns in his career, including three straight from 2021 through 2023. Last season, he was on pace for another strong year before the injury, snagging 50 passes for 576 yards and five scores in just seven games.

Even before his latest setback, things were looking different in Tampa Bay. The Bucs' passing game shifted, with Mike Evans and rookie Emeka Egbuka being focal points when healthy.

Rookie Tez Johnson, alongside Kameron Johnson and Sterling Shepard, has stepped up in Godwin's absence. The team isn't waiting around for him to return; they're filling the gaps while QB Baker Mayfield puts on an MVP-worthy show.

To make matters worse for Godwin, the team hasn't given us a clear statement on when he'll return. Head coach Todd Bowles did mention that it is not related to his original fibula injury, but that doesn't lessen the concern.

Godwin couldn't get through two full games before going down again, and it's becoming hard to trust his health. Unless you have a free IR spot, it's time to move on. Don't wait around for his unclear return when other available players are producing right now.

Who Should I Pick Up for Fantasy Football?

If you're cutting ties with Godwin, there are plenty of waiver options to plug in depending on your team's needs.

One of those players is Josh Downs, a reliable option who scored his first touchdown of the season in Week 6. He's quietly becoming one of Daniel Jones' favorite weapons, bringing in six passes in back-to-back contests.

Downs' upside isn't huge, but he's still dependable. That's exactly what you need during those dreaded bye weeks and when injuries pop up. He's dealing with his own injury, a concussion, and is ruled out for Week 7. Worth stashing while he recovers.

If you're feeling a little riskier, taking a shot on Kameron Johnson could work out well. He wasn't on the radar until Week 6, when he caught all four of his targets for 64 yards and a score in Tampa Bay's victory over San Francisco.

As noted, Mike Evans and Emeka Egbuka are dealing with hamstring injuries, giving Johnson another opportunity to shine. This week, he's facing a Detroit defense allowing the sixth-most fantasy points per game to opposing wideouts. He might not have long-term value, but he can help you in a pinch.

And keep an eye on Kayshon Boutte in New England, as he just exploded in Week 6 with five catches for 93 yards and two scores. That production was good enough for 26.3 PPR points.

Now that Drake Maye is settling in, the wideout should keep the momentum rolling as he faces the Titans. They're giving up the eighth-most receiving yards to wide receivers this season, so yardage will be available for Boutte in this contest. Pick him up if you need a flex with upside.
