Week 6 Quarterback Rankings Outlooks

J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said on Monday that quarterback J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is expected to resume practicing next week as they head into a Week 7 tilt against the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Emily Leiker of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. McCarthy suffered a high-ankle sprain in the Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and has not played since. The 22-year-old will have an extra week to recover, though, with the Vikings on bye in Week 6 following two straight weeks of international games in Ireland and England.

The Vikings still believe in McCarthy as their QB of the future, but McCarthy has been non-committal on whether he will jump right back in as the starter when he's past his ankle injury after struggling in his first two NFL regular-season games. Veteran Carson Wentz could be in line for a fourth straight start in Week 7 against his former team, the Eagles.

Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said that quarterback Kyler Murray (foot) will be monitored this week after briefly leaving the Week 5 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday to have his foot evaluated in the locker room, according to Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com. The fact that Murray returned and finished out Sunday's game should give fantasy managers hope that he'll be able to play in Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts.

However, Gannon is leaving things up in the air early in the week, so we'll have to pay close attention to the 28-year-old signal-caller's practice status later in the week. Murray had another middling fantasy outing against the Titans, throwing for 220 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. He added a rushing touchdown but also lost a fumble. If Murray is unable to play in Week 6, veteran Jacoby Brissett would make the start against the one-loss Colts.

Jaxson Dart, New York Giants

New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart (hamstring) was listed as a limited practice participant on the team's Monday injury report. The Giants play on Thursday night in Week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles, so Monday's injury report is an estimation of practice status. Dart has thrown for 313 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions across his first two starts in the NFL over the last two weeks. If he were unable to suit up in Week 6, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson would likely take over under center for the Giants.

Wilson started New York's first three games of the season, throwing for 786 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Either quarterback is tough for fantasy managers to trust in a short week against a difficult opponent in the Eagles.

Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

As San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) continues to deal with a turf-toe injury that has now kept him out of three games, backup Mac Jones has stepped in admirably, prompting some to wonder if a quarterback controversy could be brewing in the Bay Area. Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show on Monday, NFL Insider Adam Schefter was quick to dismiss the idea.

Purdy and the 49ers agreed to a five-year contract extension before the start of the season that keeps him tied to the team through 2030. So while Jones has been impressive in running Kyle Shanahan's offense and saying the right things along the way, Schefter does not believe there's any threat of him maintaining the job once Purdy returns to health.

Jake Browning, Cincinnati Bengals

Per ESPN's Ben Baby, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor sounded "open to the possibility of a quarterback change" after another poor showing by veteran signal-caller Jake Browning. When asked if he still believes in Browning moving forward, Taylor replied, "After a game like that, we're going to look at all personnel to make sure we're doing the right thing." Taylor also noted that he still believes the 29-year-old can "win games for us," but it's fair to wonder if his time is running short after a third multi-interception performance in four outings.

As for a potential replacement, Cincinnati currently boasts Brett Rypien on its active roster, along with Mike White and Sean Clifford on the practice squad. If the Bengals do opt to go in another direction, it wouldn't be surprising to see them do so from outside the organization. He won't be a recommended fantasy option until stringing together a few more promising outings.

Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has been on an absolute heater of late, recording 764 passing yards and six touchdowns over his last two games. The 37-year-old now gets an extremely favorable Week 6 matchup against the banged-up Baltimore Ravens, who have allowed 81 points over their last two contests.

Stafford's lack of rushing ability limits his fantasy potential, but he leads the NFL in passing yards (1,503) through five weeks and has also thrown for 11 touchdowns. He should be rostered as a low-end starter for Week 6 in single-QB formats, and he profiles as a must-start player in two-quarterback leagues.

Dillon Gabriel, Cleveland Browns

Despite taking a loss, Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel did not look overmatched in his NFL debut against a tough Brian Flores defense. The Vikings' coordinator is notorious for giving even veteran QBs trouble with his unit's exotic looks and pressures. Gabriel did an excellent job of protecting the ball and, for the most part, played smart, mistake-free football. Cleveland leaned on their ground game until late in the contest, understandably, as they'll aim to win many of their games with a strong rushing attack and solid defense.

While the 24-year-old still has a way to go before becoming a suggested option in single quarterback leagues, he's an intriguing pickup in superflex formats and a decent stash in dynasty. Gabriel will get another tough matchup in Week 6 when his team takes on the hosting Pittsburgh Steelers.
