Week 2 Quarterback Rankings Outlooks
Justin Fields, New York Jets
While nobody is mistaking New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields for two-time MVP Lamar Jackson, the former first-rounder does have a similar dual-threat skill set at the position and could give the Buffalo Bills defense more issues after they couldn't stop Jackson and the Ravens offense at all in Week 1. Fields and the Jets offense looked much better in their loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, with Fields accounting for three touchdowns (one passing, two rushing).
The 26-year-old went 16-for-22 passing for 218 yards while rushing 12 times for 48 yards. Buffalo's defense also gave up three total touchdowns to Jackson while allowing 40 total points, so on that logic alone, Fields and the Jets offense could keep it going in Week 2 at home. Field's rushing upside alone should give him a high floor with QB1 potential every week in fantasy.
Mac Jones, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones will get the start in Sunday's meeting with the Saints. With Brock Purdy (toe) out for the foreseeable future, the 49ers will now turn to Jones, who hasn't exactly had the best track record since entering the league in 2021. San Francisco will also be without George Kittle (hamstring). That may also be the case for Jauan Jennings (shoulder), who is listed as questionable. However, Christian McCaffrey is in the mix, which certainly helps take some pressure off of the signal-caller.
Jones, who has thrown for 10,590 yards, 54 touchdowns, and 44 interceptions throughout his career, reportedly looked good during training camp. All things considered, Jones has a favorable matchup in Week 2 versus New Orleans, so he deserves consideration in SuperFlex formats. The 27-year-old should also see interest from DFS managers due to his rostering cost.
Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is coming off a strong fantasy performance, completing 21 of 35 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown while adding six carries for 58 yards and another score on the ground. Despite Chicago's tough loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Williams showcased his dual-threat ability and the kind of upside that can make him a valuable fantasy asset.
In Week 2, Williams draws the Detroit Lions, a defense he thrived against in 2024, averaging 24 fantasy points across two meetings. With head coach Ben Johnson making his return to Detroit, the atmosphere at Ford Field will be intense, but Williams' rushing floor keeps him in play. Consider him a high-end QB2 this week and a must-start in Superflex formats.
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 for a Super Bowl rematch. The last time these two teams matched up, the Eagles ended up taking home the Lombardi trophy. Jalen Hurts and the gang are coming off a Thursday night win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, while the Chiefs suffered a one-possession loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday. The 29-year-old had a decent performance against the Chargers, passing for 258 yards and a touchdown while adding 57 yards and a score on the ground.
That said, Mahomes will have the odds stacked against him on Sunday, facing one of the best defenses in the league without two of his top offensive weapons. Rashee Rice is still serving his suspension, and Xavier Worthy is listed as doubtful for the upcoming matchup. Despite playing at Arrowhead this weekend, Mahomes and the Chiefs are home underdogs against the Eagles. The Chiefs quarterback is ranked QB11 in our RotoBaller rankings this week, making him a fringe-QB1.
J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is a high-end Superflex option as his team plays host to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2. Following a brutal first half in the season-opener at Chicago, the Michigan product came alive in the second half, accounting for three fourth-quarter touchdowns and his first NFL win.
Now playing behind a home crowd and facing a friendlier matchup from a fantasy perspective, McCarthy has a reasonable opportunity to improve on a lackluster Week 1 from a completions and yards perspective. Attached to a strong supporting cast, McCarthy should give managers some value at the Superflex spot.
Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. performed well in Week 1, completing 27 of 42 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown without throwing an interception, while also adding six rushes for 21 yards and a score. In Week 2, he'll have a road matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, who were tough against the run last season, allowing the second-fewest rush yards per game (93.2), and who only allowed 61 rush yards to non-quarterbacks in Week 1.
It likely means the Falcons will lean on the pass again in this matchup, and the 25-year-old will have a full complement of receivers as Drake London (shoulder) and Darnell Mooney (shoulder) were both full participants in practice on Friday. The Vikings defense will be without a couple of pieces on Sunday, namely Andrew Van Ginkel (concussion), who nearly led the team in sacks in 2024 with 11.5, so the former first-round draft pick shapes up as a mid-range QB2 this week whose arrow is pointing up.
