Week 2 Fantasy Football Kicker Outlooks
Brandon McManus, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay Packers kicker Brandon McManus looks to keep his solid run going in Week 2 as the Packers host the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football. McManus kicked two field goals from 38 and 34 yards out and converted all three of his extra point attempts in Week 1 as the Packers beat the Lions 27-19.
In the regular season, McManus has missed just one kick in his Packers' career, so he's been reliable. Given that the Packers are on a trajectory to be one of the upper-echelon teams in the NFL, McManus should get plenty of opportunities in the future for Green Bay. He's startable in leagues with a kicker slot if you didn't get one of the top kickers in your draft.
Matt Gay, Washington Commanders
Washington Commanders kicker Matt Gay did not attempt a field goal in their 21-6 Week 1 win over the Giants, but he converted all three extra points. Gay likely would have had a field-goal opportunity at the end of the first half, but Washington was called for an intentional-grounding penalty with a handful of seconds left and no timeouts left, leaving the clock to run out. The offense had other sloppy moments that ended potential scoring drives early, but they still moved the ball at will. In a projected shootout on Thursday night in Green Bay, Gay should be fired up as one of the top kicker options in Week 2.
Andre Szmty, Cleveland Browns
Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said that rookie Andre Szmyt will kick for the team on Sunday in Week 2 against the division-rival Baltimore Ravens and said he expects the young kicker to get better. In his NFL debut in the one-point loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1, Szmyt missed one of his two extra-point tries and also missed a 36-yard field-goal attempt that would have given Cleveland a lead in the fourth quarter on Sunday.
The Browns are sticking with the Syracuse product for now, but if he continues to struggle, it will be interesting to see how long a leash Stefanski gives him. Szmyt connected on a field goal over 40 yards in his other try in his first regular-season NFL game. For fantasy purposes, stay away from the young kicker.
Eddie Pineiro, San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are signing free-agent kicker Eddy Pineiro to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday after waiving struggling kicker Jake Moody earlier in the day, sources told Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports. Pineiro, 29, is currently the third-most accurate kicker in league history with an 88.1 percent success rate, which is behind only Justin Tucker and Harrison Butker.
Pineiro spent the last three seasons kicking for the Carolina Panthers and went 80-for-90 on his field-goal tries, including going 8-for-11 from 50-plus yards, and 80-for-87 on extra points in 49 games. The 49ers are hoping that the veteran kicker can be much more effective than Moody has been.
Jake Moody, Free Agent
The San Francisco 49ers are waiving kicker Jake Moody on Tuesday, a source told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Moody made 84 percent of his 25 field-goal attempts and led the league with 60 extra points made in his rookie campaign in 2023, but it quickly went downhill for him from there. The 25-year-old struggled in the postseason in 2023 and then made only 24 of his 35 field-goal tries in 14 games in his sophomore season a year ago.
Moody then made just one of his three field-goal attempts (one was blocked) in the Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday to seal his fate in the Bay Area. He will now attempt to latch on with another team heading into Week 2. The Niners don't currently have another kicker on their roster, so they will be working out options this week to kick for them in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
John Parker Romo, Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons are signing kicker Parker Romo to their practice squad, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Current Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo had a rough game in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, missing a 44-yard field goal attempt that would have tied the game with under five seconds to go.
Romo appeared in four games for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024, making 11 of his 12 field goal attempts and seven of eight extra-point attempts. Koo does not appear to have lost his job yet, but Atlanta has now brought in some competition in case he falters in a critical late-game situation again.
