2025 Fantasy Football Running Back Outlooks

Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is healthy after a year largely lost to bilateral Achilles tendinitis and then a PCL injury to his right knee. He averaged just four yards per carry and under four yards per catch (3.8) for the first time in his career, no matter the sample size. CMC also failed to score a touchdown on his 65 total touches. The 29-year-old has now missed over half of the season in three of his last five campaigns, but the healthy 2022 and '23 were stellar (especially after the SF trade).

Last year may have been a wash, but the previous season supplied a career-best 21 total TDs with over 2,000 yards from scrimmage. Still on the right side of 30, McCaffrey is likely defined as the boom-bust pick of 2025 fantasy football drafts. Many fantasy managers stuck near the back of the first round will grab CMC with the hopes of getting a discount on a top player, as the 49ers hope the entire offense can enjoy better health.

- Nick Mariano

Kyren Williams, Cincinnati Bengals

Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams has been one of the more consistent fantasy options in recent years. After finishing as the RB7 in PPR formats in 2023, many fantasy managers believed another top-10 running back finish was not possible. He was set to return punts, and the Rams selected Blake Corum in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. However, Williams showed last year that this is firmly his backfield. The 24-year-old ran 316 times for 1,299 yards and 14 touchdowns across 16 games.

Those strong numbers helped him finish as the RB7 in PPR formats for the second consecutive year. Meanwhile, Corum only saw 58 opportunities on the ground in his rookie season. Therefore, this will be Williams' backfield once again. He saw at least 18 carries in 10 of 16 games and averaged just over 17 PPR fantasy points per game. Now, fumbles remain a huge problem for the Pro Bowl running back. He fumbled six times throughout the 2024-2025 season. But if he hangs onto the ball and doesn't turn it over as much, this is his backfield to lose. That makes him a strong RB1 option once again this year.

- Joey Pollizze

Jordan Mason, Minnesota Vikings

Jordan Mason enjoyed a nice 2024 season. He ran for a career-best 789 rushing yards while filling in for an injured Christian McCaffrey. Mason's advanced metrics were also quite good. Among 46 backs with 100+ carries, Mason finished third in Next Gen Stats rush yards over expected, 10th in PFF's elusive rating, and 19th in PFF's rushing grade. Clearly, the Minnesota Vikings took notice and acquired him in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. Minnesota also re-signed Aaron Jones to a two-year extension this offseason.

However, it's worth noting that Mason finished higher than Jones in each of the above metrics. Minnesota has also made it clear they want to lighten Jones' workload this season. Mason could be in line for a larger role than some think. At the very least, he is a great target later in drafts as a Jones handcuff. However, Mason might offer some standalone value as a potential flex play.

- Dave Ventresca

J.K. Dobbins, Denver Broncos

If you watched the Los Angeles Chargers' offense last year, you know that J.K. Dobbins was a big part of it. He ran for 905 yards and nine touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry, and was the key to OC Greg Roman's physical run game. However, despite outstanding play, he was not signed by any team during free agency until June 10.

The Denver Broncos signed Dobbins to a one-year, $ 5.25 million contract this offseason. There's a big reason for that: Dobbins has had just one NFL season where he has played at least 10 games, and he's going into his sixth season. In his NFL career alone, Dobbins has torn his LCL, ACL, and Achilles and also suffered a knee sprain that caused him to miss four games in 2024. Dobbins is still just 26 years old, and the Broncos don't need him to be a workhorse. Second-round rookie RJ Harvey, second-year bulldozer Audric Estime, and third-year scatback Jaleel McLaughlin will all contribute to Sean Payton's high-powered offense.

Expect Dobbins and Harvey to handle most of the carries, with Estime getting some short-yardage work and McLaughlin chipping in on third downs.
