TGL Week 7 Preview: LA vs. NY, BOS vs. ATL, BAY vs. JUP

Playoff scenarios are beginning to take shape and TGL has an action-packed week ahead with three matchups that have major implications. On Monday night, we kick things off with a classic east-coast/west-coast battle when LA takes on NY, followed by Boston vs. Atlanta in the nightcap.

The Jupiter Links will try to recapture the magic from a few weeks ago after an embarrassing performance last Tuesday, but they'll have to rise to the occasion against the best team in TGL, The Bay Golf Club. No Tiger Woods for Jupiter, and The Bay will compete in the first match without Genesis Invitational Champion Ludvig Aberg.

With three matches on tap, there's a lot to quickly digest to get you prepared for Monday. I've got you covered, and here is everything you need to know for Week 7:

Match 10 : 5 PM ET - ESPN 2

Los Angeles Golf Club (2-0-1)

The Rundown

We had our first team make a move on the waiver wire this season. When Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood both had other commitments this week, LA made the big move to sign world #26 Tony Finau to a one-match contact. I have mixed feelings about how this all took place, but the reality is that Tony Finau will dawn the NYGC Black Polo in the Sofi Center on Monday.

LAGC has a lot to play for, with a 2-0-1 record, they can clinch a spot in the TGL Playoffs with a win. They lead the TGL in total holes won on the season (20) and I can tell from up and close personal experience, that this team is really embracing the strategic elements and seems to have an answer for every scenario that plays out. Collin Morikawa returns to the starting lineup as well. He's been steller on the sim and has yet to lose a single hole in the singles format.

New York got a massive win last Tuesday against Jupiter. They opened up an early 6-0 lead and never looked back, clearly the superior team all night long. They will go with the exact same roster this week with Xander Schauffele still on the shelf due to injury.

This New York team currently leads the TGL in average Drivance Distance on the back on Cameron Young who has recorded three of the six longest drives this season. Young and Fowler both played much better last Tuesday and they seem to be getting more comfortable with the format. They are going to need the best performance of the season out of Matt Fitzpatrick, who has yet to record a single point in Singles and has to go head-to-head with Collin Morikawa.

The Course Setup

LA -150 vs. NY +120 (via betonline)

Inside the Sofi Center last Tuesday night, it felt like this New York team took a big step forward in terms of performance and continuity. That will be put to the test against LAGC who has shown the most willingness to lean on one another and strategize effectively as a team throughout this season.

The only caveat here is that I feel like the linchpin has been Justin Rose. Rose has not only been an incredible teammate, he's performed exceptionally well. Tony Finau is a wild card. It does feel like his skill set was built to dominate the sim, but Monday will likely be the very first time he's ever set foot inside the Sofi Center and certainly has never been on a simulator quite like this one.

The unknown with Finau is causing me to take more of a wait and see approach to the match betting line. The matchup that I am going to play is Collin Morikawa -140 over Matt Fitzpatrick in singles. Morikawa is 2-0-2 in singles thus far and Fitzpatrick is 0-2-4. They will play short par 4 Loot on the Line and the 170 yard par 3 Set in Stone.

Match 11 :  9 PM ET - ESPN

Boston Common (0-2-1)

Player 1: Keegan Bradley

Player 2: Hideki Matsuyama

Player 3: Rory McIlroy

Atlanta Drive (2-1-0)

Player 1: Justin Thomas

Player 2: Billy Horschel

Player 3: Patrick Cantlay

The Rundown

It's a must-win time for the Boston Common. This may be the most talented "regular" golf team in the league. I still can't believe that they somehow lost to Jup Links. That win should be nominated for an ESPY for Upset of the Year.

Atlanta played in a couple of thrilling matches on Presidents Day. They needed a Justin Thomas chip-in on the final hole to force overtime against LA, then went on to win in the chip-off. Luck was not on their side in the second match that day against The Bay, as Thomas's birdie putt down the plateau narrowly missed to force another OT.

Boston is ultimately down, but not out. A win in this match could potentially move them into 4th place and in the playoff race. This roster gives them their best chance to win. They'll roll out two top-5 players in the world, alongside Keegan Bradley who has been dominant in singles, winning his last four holes against opponents.

Atlanta Drive -125 vs. Boston +105

These lineups are stacked, and TGL officials have given them what I believe to be one of the toughest course setups that we have seen to date. Pick Yer Plunder and Temple have proven to be the two toughest holes in TGL, both featuring a greens-in-regulation rate below 20%.

This matchup is full of several intriguing singles matchups. Justin Thomas vs. Hideki Matsuyama should be electric. Matsuyama has a more accomplished player career, but we know JT thrives in these environments. He's also 4-1 against Matsuyama when paired against each other in the Presidents Cup.

The main course of the night is a battle between two guys who really don't like each other. Comments have been made, fistpumps have been thrown, and the animosity was palpable at the last Ryder Cup when things got quite heated between Cantlay and McIlroy. This match will likely be close and ultimately come down to which player wins this final individual matchup. I'm all for personal rivalries being played out in TGL!

The Bay (3-0)

Player 1: Tom Kim

Player 3: Max Homa

The Rundown

We have ourselves a pretty straightforward rundown in our third matchup of week 7. The Bay has been the best team in the TGL and the Jupiter Links are the worst team in the league.

Tiger Woods, after a rough showing last week, will sit this one out as the Links get Max Homa back in the lineup. Meanwhile, The Bay will compete in their first match without Genesis Invitational winner and PGA Tour money leader Ludvig Aberg, who has unsurprisingly also been a stud in TGL.

There's always a chance in TGL and we have seen upsets before because so much comes down to success putting on the greens. That said, Jupiter has so much ground to make up off the tee and this course set up is long. The first two holes total nearly 1,100 yards right out of the gate with the tee shots for Jupiter hit by Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner, two of the shortest drivers in the TGL.

The Bay -165 vs. Jupiter Links +135 (betonline)

I bet this line hard as soon as it came out. I think the sportsbooks are hesitant to post a big number on an underdog in this format which is still relatively new, and they definitely got exposed a few weeks back when Jupiter Links beat Boston at +220 odds.

That said, this matchup isn't close. The Bay average 318 yards in driving distance, 2nd best in the league while Jupiter ranks last. The Bay also ranks 1st in Driving Accuracy, GIR, shot putt percentage, and scrambling. It's been total domination and they have won a total of 18 holes this season.
