Tyler Glasnow - Fantasy Baseball Rankings, MLB Injury News

Fantasy baseball injury updates and injury reports for MLB pitchers as of 8/22/2024, including Tyler Glasnow, Max Scherzer, Jared Jones, Luis Gil, Ryan Pressly, and more.

September marks the start of the fantasy baseball playoffs, so fantasy managers must stay in the know when it comes to the latest injury headlines. That said, let's take a look at injured pitchers Tyler Glasnow, Max Scherzer, Jared Jones, Luis Gil, Ryan Pressly, and more.

This is our weekly edition of fantasy baseball injury updates for pitchers as of August 22, 2024. Whether your top ace is out of action or a depth player is banged up, some players on this list are sure to affect fantasy baseball lineup decisions.

Tyler Glasnow Injury Update

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow (elbow) has not started throwing again, according to manager Dave Roberts, and will likely need more than the minimum 15 days he was initially expected to miss when he landed on the injured list.

Roberts said the Dodgers aren't concerned at this point and just want Glasnow to "listen to his body" for now. Fantasy managers now cannot count on Glasnow coming off the IL when he's eligible on Aug. 31, but it sounds like the Dodgers expected him back at some point in September.

The 30-year-old is tied for the third-best strikeout rate (32.2%) in baseball this year, which makes him worth holding onto in all fantasy leagues, but he may only have a handful of starts left to make an impact, depending on when he's activated and makes his next start. In his first year in LA, Glasnow is 9-6 with a 3.49 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 168 K's in 134 innings over 22 starts.

Max Scherzer Injury Update

Texas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer (shoulder) will pitch for the Rangers against the Chicago White Sox next week "if all goes well" with his minor-league rehab start on Friday with Double-A Frisco, according to manager Bruce Bochy. Scherzer threw a bullpen session on Tuesday. "All went well, really well. He feels good, we like where he's at," Bochy said.

The 40-year-old three-time Cy Young winner hasn't pitched in the big leagues since July 30 due to right-shoulder fatigue and has made only eight starts in 2024 due to various injuries.

Scherzer isn't the dominant fantasy ace anymore, which we've all come to know, but it still might be pretty hard to pass him up as a streamer in his potential return from the injured list next week against the lowly White Sox. Depending on how many pitches he throws in his rehab start on Friday, Scherzer could very well be facing a pitch-count restriction next week.

Jared Jones Injury Update

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie right-hander Jared Jones (lat) was impressive in his latest minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, tossing five shutout innings while giving up only one hit, walking one, and striking out 10. Jones looked to be in midseason form, especially with his fastball, which topped out near 100 mph.

The 23-year-old is fully expected to come off the 15-day injured list to make his next start in the big leagues after this impressive performance.

Jones hasn't pitched in the big leagues since July 3, and the Pirates weren't in any rush to bring him back, especially after a rough recent stretch that has really hurt their chances of getting into the postseason.

Although Jones won't have much time to make a difference for fantasy managers to close out his rookie year, he shouldn't be ignored in mixed leagues after fanning 26.4% of the batters he faced in his first 16 MLB starts earlier this year. (Milb.com)

Luis Gil Injury Update

The New York Yankees placed right-hander Luis Gil (back) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a lower-back strain and recalled right-handed pitching prospect Will Warren from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

The move comes after Gil had to leave his start early on Tuesday against the Cleveland Guardians with a back ailment. The 26-year-old could be running out of steam after missing most of the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery.

However, he has been excellent for most of 2024 for fantasy managers, going 12-6 with a 3.39 ERA (3.86 FIP), a 1.19 WHIP, and a 144:66 K:BB in 124 2/3 innings over his 24 starts. Gil, who leads the league in walks, won't be eligible to return from the IL until Sept. 5, and the Yankees may elect not to rush him back so that they can have him fully healthy for a potential playoff run.

Warren figures to replace Gil in the Yankees' rotation. UPDATE: The Yankees think Gil's back strain is minor. They hope he can continue throwing while on the IL, and manager Aaron Boone sees him returning as a starter.

Ryan Pressly Injury Update

Houston Astros right-hander reliever Ryan Pressly (back) threw a bullpen session at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday before the series finale against the Boston Red Sox. Manager Joe Espada said that Pressly probably won't need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before coming off the injured list.

A lower-back strain put the 35-year-old veteran on the 15-day IL last weekend, but he's making good progress and should be ready to rejoin the big-league bullpen when he's eligible to return on Aug. 29.

A rough stretch before his injury ballooned Pressly's ERA on the season to 3.86, while he's also holding a 1.41 WHIP with two saves and 49 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings pitched in 2024. When he rejoins the Astros, he should return to a key late-inning setup role for the first-place Astros, making him valuable in deeper holds leagues.

Hunter Harvey Injury Update

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Hunter Harvey's back "wasn't loosening up" as much as he or the team would have liked by Monday and Tuesday, according to manager Matt Quatraro. Harvey received a cortisone injection on Tuesday, which will shut him down from all activity until Thursday or Friday, but Quatraro said the hurler could be throwing again by the end of the week.

Harvey was thought to be making good progress over the last week since he went on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 7, but this pushes his timeline back at least until the Royals can see how he responds to the injection and determine his next steps.

The 29-year-old right-hander seemed to be pushing for closing duties in KC's bullpen before getting sidelined, so fantasy managers should pay attention to this late-inning hierarchy going forward.

Clarke Schmidt Injury Update

New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt (lat) expects to make his first minor-league rehab start on Friday, likely for Double-A Somerset. Schmidt is set to throw around 50 pitches in what should be the first of multiple rehab outings in the minor leagues, and if all goes well on his assignment, he could return to the big leagues during the second week of September.

Before heading to the shelf due to a strained right lat, the 28-year-old upstart right-hander was one of New York's top pitchers, going 5-3 with a 2.52 ERA and 67 strikeouts over 60 2/3 innings (11 starts). Once Schmidt is back in the mix, it'll be interesting to see if the Yankees opt to employ a six-man rotation or move one of their current starters into the bullpen.
