Wilyer Abreu Injury Update for Fantasy Baseball

It appears fantasy managers won't have to wait much longer for Abreu's return as skipper Alex Cora said on Tuesday that Abreu is "doing everything" before the team's contest against the Phillies and that he feels Abreu will be back much sooner than originally anticipated.

The outfielder has produced a quality power/speed combination since entering the big leagues late in the 2023 season, so fantasy managers will want to keep a close eye on his status in the coming days. It's unclear if he will require a rehab stint at this point but it doesn't appear as if a potential minor-league stint would last more than a game or two.

Wilyer Abreu Fantasy Baseball Outlook

Abreu has done nothing but hit since getting his big-league call in 2023. He has hit .286 with eight homers, 10 stolen bases, and an .840 OPS across his first 81 career MLB contests, production that has graded out 30% above the league average, as per his 130 wRC+. This comes on the heels of consistent minor-league production, which featured quality doses of power and speed.

While the rookie is coming along nicely, fantasy managers might want to brace for some regression upon his return. Not only has Abreu benefited from a bloated .373 BABIP in his young career, but his .318 xwOBA in 2024 sits well below his .360 wOBA. His batted-ball profile is excellent from a hard-hit and barrel-rate standpoint, but the remainder of his profile is incomplete.

There is plenty to like with Abreu and dynasty managers will want to play out the long game but redraft managers will want to exercise some more discipline in case the regression train hits upon his return.
