ANALYSIS: Kyle Bradish is in the midst of a difficult week, facing the dangerous Yankees lineup on Tuesday and lining up to face the Rangers on Sunday, the top offense in baseball. His Sunday start is thankfully lined up to be at Camden Yards, a ballpark that’s done a great job at limiting right-handed power bats since the organization made a dimension change in the outfield. Can Bradish limit the potent Rangers offense enough to warrant a pickup in fantasy baseball?
With enticing prospects getting the call to the bigs, let’s discuss if Bradish has enough season-long upside to justify a pickup in fantasy baseball. Bradish has produced three quality starts in eight tries since missing the first week of the season due to a foot injury. His season-long ERA sits at 4.34 with 32 strikeouts to 13 walks in 37 1/3 innings pitched.
The 26-year-old has made positive strides in the month of May, pitching at least 5 innings in each of his four starts, including his most recent start in New York. Bradish has a 3.18 ERA, 1.13 WHIP over 22 2/3 IP with 18 strikeouts to just six walks in May. He also tentatively lined up to face the Giants, an easier opponent, in another pitching-friendly park in San Francisco to start off June.
Besides Tyler Wells, Bradish has been the Orioles' best option as they wait for Grayson Rodriguez to come around and John Means to return from his elbow injury. They’re doing their best to stay afloat in a tough American League East division while pursuing the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Bradish may be worth the risk in deeper fantasy formats if he can find his slider again in his next start. The righty has generated five-plus whiffs with his slider in each of his quality starts this year. It’s important for him to rely on his secondary pitches because opponents are hitting .406 versus his four-seam fastball this season.
