Week 2 Fantasy Football Running Back Outlooks
Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Washington Commanders
Washington Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt could be in line for more touches in Week 2 against the Packers after an exciting debut. His 82 rushing yards were the most among the rookie running backs in Week 1, and he had the highest PFF rushing grade in the league. The seventh rounder was hyper-efficient on his touches, with a 50% success rate as a runner and ran for over 10 yards on a league high 30% of his touches. His role in the offense should expand a bit as the season goes along, but it will likely look pretty similar to Week 1.
Austin Ekeler will continue to handle the majority of the pass-down reps, and a third back, either Jeremy McNichols or Chris Rodriguez Jr., will have complementary roles as well. Croskey-Merritt likely won't catch many passes and will need to find the end zone to have an impactful game for fantasy, putting him in FLEX territory for now.
Josh Jacobs, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs looks to build off a solid Week 1 performance in his Week 2 matchup at home against the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night. Jacobs scored a touchdown and took 19 totes for 66 yards on the ground with a catch for yards through the air. It was a typical line for Jacobs, who has been a touchdown-scoring machine for the Packers since last season's Week 10 bye, having scored at least one rushing touchdown in every game since.
He's one of the most dependable fantasy running backs in the league with volume and production on what looks like one of the best teams in the NFL. Jacobs is an easy RB1 for Week 2's matchup with Washington, with his typical volume as he looks to make it 10 straight regular-season games with a rushing touchdown.
Austin Ekeler, Washington Commanders
Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler operated mostly as the team's lead back in Week 1 against the Giants, leading the backfield with 32 snaps out of 65 plays. He only touched the ball nine times for the game, but was again efficient with 57 yards. The roles are still fairly fluid in the Washington backfield, but Week 1 could be instructive for how it might look going forward. Washington essentially gave Ekeler and Croskey-Merritt their own drives against the Giants, which is interesting.
Ekeler was out-carried by Croskey-Merritt 10 to six, and the rookie could continue to earn more touches as the season goes on. Ekeler faces another stiff test against the Packers' defense that held Lions superstar running back Jahmyr Gibbs to just 50 yards on 19 touches. He should be looked at as a quality FLEX with projectable volume for Week 2.
Kyle Monangai, Chicago Bears
According to Courtney Cronin of ESPN, Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson may look to give rookie running back Kyle Monangai more opportunities in the future. When asked about Monangai's usage on Monday, given that he logged nine snaps without any carries, Johnson expressed that "I need to call more runs" and "I need to call more so that we get him in the game a little bit more. That's something EB and I have talked about, making sure he has more carries going forward."
In their season opener against the Vikings, veteran D'Andre Swift ran the ball 17 times and caught three passes. Monangai, the seventh-round rookie out of Rutgers, caught his lone target for 11 yards. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues should consider stashing Monangai, as it appears he could carve into Swift's role as the season progresses.
Bhayshul Tuten, Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville Jaguars rookie running back Bhayshul Tuten is set to see increased opportunities in Week 2 following the trade of Tank Bigsby. Tuten logged three carries for 11 yards in Jacksonville's 26-10 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 1. The backfield was dominated by starter Travis Etienne, who piled up 156 scrimmage yards on 19 touches. Tuten is expected to split backup duties with fellow rookie LeQuint Allen Jr., the 2025 seventh-round pick who profiles more as a pass-catching option.
The Jaguars head on the road to face the Cincinnati Bengals, whose run defense looked sharp in Week 1, holding Cleveland's ground game under 50 total yards and just 2.0 yards per carry. While Tuten is an intriguing stash given the shift in Jacksonville's depth chart, Etienne remains the clear workhorse, so the rookie running back should remain on your bench this week.
