Preview

With many eyes on the United States, this will be their third major tournament to play in, winning the CONCACAF Nations League and the 2021 Gold Cup under new manager Greg Berhalter. Despite the success and growing talent pool the United States has, there are many questions and concerns regarding what they can do in their return to the World Cup, after missing out in 2018 – had not missed a World Cup since 1986 –.

Further scrutiny was put on the United States after the roster submission with noticeable exclusions: Ricardo Pepi - FC Groningen & Jordan Pefok - Union Berlin. Will the United States surpass their best-ever efforts in the modern day – Quarter Finals in 2002 –, or will they fail to make it out of the Group Stage?

Prediction: Lose in Round of 16

Who is Starting for (United States) Squad in the 2022 World Cup

Predicted Starting 11 (4-2-3-1): Turner, Dest, Zimmerman, Ream, Robinson, Adams, Musah, McKennie, Weah, Pulisic, Ferreira

Alternate Options By Position:

GK: Horvath, Johnson

DF: Long, Moore, Scally, Yedlin, Carter-Vickers

MF: Acosta, de la Torre, Roldan, Aaronson

FW: Morris, Reyna, Sargent, Wright

Who Are United States’ Best Players To Watch?

Defense:

Walker Zimmerman, Nashville SC (CB)

The United States will rely on the sentinel, Walker Zimmerman in the heart of the defense. After a few stints with FC Dallas and LAFC, Zimmerman has found himself at home in Nashville. Despite him not winning any MLS Cup titles yet, he does have a few titles under his belt on the National Team and is the second-most capped defender with 33 career starts. With a questionable and aging Tim Ream next to him, Zimmerman will be relied on to track a majority of the attackers, making him a great peripheral center-back.

Midfield:

Tyler Adams, Leeds United (CDM)

Adams will be a topic of discussion, after his quick burst of form in the weeks leading up to the World Cup with club Leeds. The midfielder has all of a sudden become the cornerstone of Leeds’ midfield controlling the pace and mitigating the opponent’s attack. He will certainly have his hands full with the likes of Gareth Bale, Harry Kane, Mason Mount and more. Thankfully, his abundance of experience overseas should help him with 119 total appearances between RB Leipzig of the Bundesliga and Leeds United of the English Premier League in all competitions. Despite Adams having 33 caps with the National Team, he has not played a hand in many matches at a major tournament – just 2 caps during the CONCACAF Nations League matches –. This will be his chance to truly announce himself to the world.

Forward:

Jesus Ferreira, FC Dallas (ST/CAM)

Many have questioned Jesus Ferreira’s ability to perform at the highest level after ex-teammate Ricardo Pepi flopped in the Bundesliga following his departure from FC Dallas. Despite the critics, Ferreira went on to amass 18 goals and 6 assists through 33 appearances in the best outing of his career. He now gets the chance to fight for a starting spot with the National Team in Qatar with teammates Haji Wright and Josh Sargent also vying for a spot in the starting XI. Ferreira does not have many appearances with the National Team, however in his short time with them, he has scored 7 goals and assisted 4 goals in 15 appearances. This is the perfect opportunity for Ferreira to cement himself into the starting XI.
