Week 3 Waiver Wire: Second Base (2B) and Shortstop (SS)

Over the course of the season I’ll be giving you two players at second base and shortstop per week who I think can help your team. These players are usually widely available in any format, and should turn nice profits in the weeks to come.

As always, feel free to reach out to me directly @Roto_Dubs with any questions about the middle infield or fantasy baseball in general.

Editor’s Note: to read about even more waiver wire options, be sure to check out our famous waiver wire pickups list which is a running list that is updated daily. Prefer using your phone? Our free waiver wire app is available for download in the Apple & Android Stores.

Second Base (2B) Waiver Wire Pickups

Javier Baez (CHC) - Owned in 32% of Fleaflicker leagues

Baez is going to be used as a super-utility man for the Cubs. He'll see time at second base, shortstop and third base depending on who needs a day off. While this won't equate to every day playing time for the young infielder, he should be out there more often than not, and that multi-poistional eligibility makes him a useful asset for fantasy purposes. In roto leagues especially, his raw power and place in the potent Cubs lineup should yield the counting stats you need to justify rostering him. The strikeouts likely won't go away and his batting average won't impress, but Baez is worth an early-season add due to his potential.

Devon Travis (TOR) - Owned in 15% of Fleaflicker leagues

While Travis won't be back with the Jays until at least May, I'm writing about him this week because if you don't grab him now, you likely won't get him. The rookie second baseman was forced to end his season early thanks to shoulder problems that sprang up in June, and he's still on the road to recovery from a surgery to fix the problem. When he was healthy, Travis was outstanding. In just 217 at-bats, he hit .304 with 38 runs scored, 35 RBIs, eight homers and three steals. He's got 15/10 potential even without any at-bats in April, and hitting in the ferocious Toronto lineup will yield plenty of opportunities for counting stats. Travis could be a top-10 second baseman by the end of the season, and you'll want to get the jump on him now.

Shortstop (SS) Waiver Wire Pickups

Marcus Semien (OAK) - Owned in 51% of Fleaflicker leagues

Semien had his power stroke going last week, clubbing three homers in just 18 at-bats. While you can't expect that kind of production every week, you CAN expect him to be a 20/10 guy batting second lead-off (the nine-hole) for the Athletics. Semien continues to be overlooked in most fantasy circles, and if he's available in your league he could very easily be slotted in as your every day shortstop. He also makes for a ridiculously cheap trade target, as he's likely one of the "throw-in" players you can get his current owner to sweeten a deal with. He's not a top-five talent at the position, but he could very well be in the top 10 of that very shallow talent pool.

Asdrubal Cabrera (NYM) - Owned in 17% of Fleaflicker leagues

This is not the All-Star Asdrubal Cabrera of 2011, folks. As one of the top young shortstops in the game, Cabrera slugged 25 homers and swiped 17 bags for the Indians. He is, however, still a very serviceable fantasy asset. Cabrera has logged at least 500 at-bats for five straight seasons, and has still hit at least 14 homers in each of those seasons. At age 30 I think it's fair to assume he's a candidate for regression, but if he comes close to last year's stat line (.265, 15 homers, 58 RBIs and 66 runs scored) you've still got a solid fantasy option as an injury fill-in or bench plug-and-play.
