Fantasy Baseball Impact Of The St. Louis Cardinals Reportedly Placing Catcher Willson Contreras On The Injured List

The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly placing catcher Willson Contreras on the injured list, according to a tweet from The Athletic’s Katie Woo on Wednesday afternoon. Woo tweeted the following:

Contreras, in his first season with the Cardinals after spending the entirety of his professional career with the division rival Chicago Cubs, enjoyed a strong season at the plate. The veteran logged a .264 batting average to go along with a .358 on-base percentage, 20 home runs, and six stolen bases in 495 plate appearances.

As of now, the only other catching options remaining on St. Louis’ 40-man roster are Andrew Knizner and Ivan Herrera.

Knizner has seen more playing time of the duo with St. Louis this season, appearing in 64 games and hitting .241 with a .284 on-base percentage, 10 home runs, and a pair of stolen bases in 216 plate appearances.

Herrera, on the other hand, is batting .348 with a .444 on-base percentage in 27 plate appearances at the major league level. Both are more options for fantasy managers in deeper leagues at this point as streaming options, with Herrera potentially the preferred option if he can maintain his hot start over the season’s final games.

All that being said, though, fantasy managers in more standard-sized leagues are probably better off looking elsewhere for late-season replacements and streaming options alike if they need to replace Contreras in fantasy lineups.
