Week 6 Quarterbacks: Waiver Wire Pickups & Adds

Welcome to our weekly preparation for week six of fantasy football for waiver wire quarterbacks We will be taking a look at some of my favorite QB picks for this week, as well as some outlooks on a couple of guys that I do and do not like for the rest of the season. Let’s jump right to it.

Fantasy Football Quarterbacks (QB) - Week 6

Strong Week Six Streamers

Austin Davis – St. Louis Rams (11% Owned on FleaFlicker)

Week Six Opponent: San Fransisco 49ers

By Johnmaxmena2 (Own work) [CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)], via Wikimedia CommonsBALLER MOVE: Austin Davis is obviously a must start in 2-QB leagues, but with his past two performances he is also a viable fantasy option for 12 team 1-QB leagues as well.

ANALYSIS: Austin Davis has been a very solid fantasy QB for the last couple of weeks (weeks three and five), posting three touchdowns and three hundred plus yards in each start while only throwing two picks over those games. Though he has a difficult matchup this week vs. a tough SF defense, we have a good feeling about Davis performing well at home.

The Niners have given up an average of 209 passing yards to opposing quarterbacks this year, but the Rams have found themselves behind in games consistently leading to a lot of passes attempted for Davis.  This game should be no different. I look for Davis to put up another solid performance this week, barring turnovers. If the Rams can control the ball, or even if they fall behind, Davis will have a strong game.

Brian Hoyer – Cleveland Browns (14% Owned on FleaFlicker)

Week Six Opponent: Pittsburgh Steelers

BALLER MOVE: Hoyer is startable in all 2-QB leagues, and he's worth streaming in 14+ 1-QB leagues as well if you’re desperate.

ANALYSIS: After a dramatic comeback win at Tennessee that saw three touchdowns and 292 yards from the hands of Hoyer, the Browns host a middle-of-the-road Pittsburgh defense that gives up 229 yards per game on average. Three touchdowns in one game is definitely an outlier for Brian Hoyer, as he only had three on the season before this week. Don’t expect a ton from him as far as TD’s go, but I think he could pile up the yardage in this one, as I see this game turning into a shootout or at the very least a game where the Browns are playing catchup. The Browns have won both games where Hoyer has had 35+ attempts and 20+ completions. I think that the Browns are starting to notice, and Hoyer will get a similar number of attempts this week.

More Week 6 Streamers and QBs to Watch

Blake Bortles Jacksonville Jaguars

Bortles has a favorable matchup against Tennessee who generally has a horrible defense and blew  a lead to Hoyer and the Browns. We will see if the rookie can capitalize.

Kyle Orton Buffalo Bills

A guy I mentioned last week, Orton led the Bills to a win over a stout Detroit D. Going forward, we will see if Orton can conquer a Patriots team that stomped the Bengals in week five.

Tom Brady - New England Patriots

On the other side of the ball from Orton this week is what appeared to be a refreshed and refocused Brady. The recent inductee to the 40,000 yards club should be one to watch, as I’m not sold that all of the problems NE was having prior to week five have been buried.

Mike Glennon - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Glennon nearly led the Bucs to a road win against the Saints in week five, and he looked impressive to me again. Look for Glennon to be held to a bit less this week by a Ravens D that held Luck and the red hot Colts to 20 points.

Rest of Season Quarterback Pick

Eli Manning – New York Giants

By Mike Morbeck (originally posted to Flickr as Eli Manning) [CC-BY-SA-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0)], via Wikimedia CommonsThrough weeks one and two, Eli Manning and the Giants looked atrocious. They looked out of sorts in every way possible. They lost by double digits to both the Lions and the Cardinals, and headed to Houston in week three they looked poised for destruction. In the first two games, Eli had more INT’s (4) than he did touchdowns (3).

Flash forward to week six, and I am willing to completely trust Eli Manning. Since week three, the Giants have won each game by double digits, and Eli has only thrown one INT in those weeks. He’s also tossed eight touchdowns, and is the proud owner of a 100+ passer rating for three consecutive weeks. Though the Giants don’t have an entirely favorable schedule going forward, I think that the minimized INT count from Manning shows that he’s got a hang of this new offense and is making good decisions. With Odell Beckham Jr. now in the lineup, and emerging TE Larry Donnell looking solid, the receiving corps is there for Eli to be very successful the rest of the year.

Rest of Season Quarterback to Avoid

Geno Smith – New York Jets

This is one segment I’ll keep short and sweet, as we all know how bad the Jets look. With no real weapons other than an injured Eric Decker, an O-Line that you could drive a car through, and a non-existent running game, the Jets showed just how bad they were in their week five loss to the Chargers. Geno found himself benched in this game, and Michael Vick took helm for the second half. Vick had similar luck and could not get the ball moving. I’ll be the first to admit that I was singing the praises of both Geno Smith and E.J. Manuel heading into the season, and boy was I mistaken. Rex Ryan has said that Geno is the Jets' QB for week six. Stay away from Geno, and anyone else on the Jets for that matter. That team has a lot to figure out offensively, and I’m afraid Geno doesn’t have the answers right now.

You can always shoot me a message or tweet me (shameless plug) @fantasycalderon if you wanna chat about some of my picks or ask any other fantasy football questions.
