After spending years struggling to land lucrative contracts, running backs have reentered the fold as teams have found a new value in the position. Minnesota Vikings free agent running back Aaron Jones finds himself in a good offseason to be a 30-year-old running back.
Of course, the league still understands the running back age-cliff. Although Jones has continued to play well to this point in his career, it is only a matter of time before his production begins to taper off. NFL teams will need to decide if they want to incur any risk with Jones this offseason.
Jones can still offer teams solid services. He could be well suited in a committee where he can be spared from his extensive injury history. Let's dive in and see where Jones' best landing spots could be in 2025.

The Case For Aaron Jones
Aaron Jones signed a one-year contract with the Vikings after his release from the Green Bay Packers following the 2023 season. While Jones was still effective when healthy, he had missed at least multiple games in five of his seven seasons in Green Bay and the Packers did not want to pay him.
Jones responded by rushing for 1,138 yards and five touchdowns and catching 51 passes for 408 yards and two touchdowns. Most notably, Jones played in every game for the Vikings in 2024.
By all accounts, Jones is an excellent teammate and leader. He is a consummate professional and is still explosive as evidenced by his 4.5 yards per carry average in 2024. He appears to have at least one or two more good years of football left in the tank.
Which Teams Would Be The Best Fit For Aaron Jones?
- Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings and Jones seem best suited for a reunion. Switching teams as an aging running back does not always bode well for the back and staying in Minnesota creates continuity. The Vikings could sign Jones and draft him a running mate in a loaded draft class.
- Los Angeles Chargers: The Chargers are attempting to win immediately and Jones would be a great addition to their offense. The Chargers have their own free agent running back in J.K. Dobbins but could look to Jones as a potential cheaper option amidst a roster with other needs.
- Las Vegas Raiders: The Raiders are clearly attempting to win now with 73-year-old head coach Pete Carroll now at the helm. By trading for former Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, they have stated those intentions with action. Jones would be a lead back in Vegas.
- Denver Broncos: It is no secret that the Broncos are in desperate need of a running back. Head coach Sean Payton loves having a running back like Jones. The Broncos were a surprise playoff team in 2024 and will look to improve in 2025. This landing spot would provide Jones with a competitive team in a system that often features multiple backs which could keep him healthy once again.
