Second Base / Shortstop Waiver Wire Pickups & Adds: Week Six

The 2015 season is well underway, but it’s never too early to start trying to improve your team. Over the course of the season I’ll be giving you two players at second base and two at shortstop each week who can help your team win. These players are usually widely available in any format, and should turn nice profits in the weeks to come. As always, feel free to reach out to me directly @Roto_Dubs with any questions about the middle infield or fantasy baseball in general.

Editor’s Note: for other waiver wire options, check out RotoBaller’s fantasy baseball waiver wire pickups list. It's updated every single day. Our awesome writers bring you analysis on hot or emerging NL-only options, and also all other fantasy positions. You can also download our waiver wire iPhone app for free, and easily stay updated.

Second Base Waiver Wire Pickups

Joe Panik (SF)—Owned in 12.2% of ESPN leagues

Panik is nothing more than serviceable second baseman 90% of the time, but he’s got enough talent that a heater can really help out a fantasy team. As of right now, my man is hot–12 for his last 40 with five RBIs, six runs scored, a pair of jacks and a steal. He shouldn’t have any trouble hitting over .275 on the year, and he’ll produce in that lineup, albeit not at a particularly high level. I’d be fine with Panik as my every day fantasy second baseman, but when he’s hot there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to find a place for him.

Baller move: Add in points leagues with 10+ teams/add in roto leagues with 10+ teams

Jace Peterson (ATL)—Owned in 1.2% of ESPN leagues

Speaking of hot, Jace Peterson is eight for his last 20. We’re talking about second base here, so none of the counting stats jump off the page. But, if you’re looking for batting average, Peterson could be a very nice addition. He’s doing just enough to merit starting in most fantasy formats, and I figure he’ll continue that trend as the season moves along. If you need a solid fill-in for an injury in the middle infield, he’s a very solid option.

Baller Move: Add in points leagues with 10+ leagues/add in roto leagues with 10+ leagues

Shortstop Waiver Wire Pickups

Brandon Crawford (SF)—Owned in 36.9% of ESPN leagues

Crawford should be owned in almost all leagues, as he’s one of the rare shortstops who produces power numbers. He’s off to a solid start this season, already plating 15 runs and knocking five out of the park, which are outstanding from any middle infielder. He’s still widely available, but if he continues to produce he won’t be for long. As long as he remains at the top of the San Francisco lineup he’ll continue to help out your fantasy team, so don’t snooze or you shall lose.

Baller Move: Add in points leagues with 10+ teams/add in all roto leagues

Yunel Escobar (WSH)—Owned in 8.7% of ESPN leagues

Anthony Rendon’s journey back from a Spring Training knee injury was sidelined by an oblique strain last week, opening the door for more playing time for Escobar. He’s currently hitting .302 with nine RBIs and 10 runs scored on the year in somewhat consistent playing time, and he should be able to maintain fantasy relevance atop the Washington order. They can’t all possibly stay this cold, so I anticipate Escobar will benefit from the rest of the lineup picking things up. Add him if you need a change at middle infield or an injury fill-in.

Baller Move: Add in points leagues with 10+ leagues/add in roto leagues with 10+ teams

BONUS ADDS

Steve Pearce (BAL)--Owned in 21.2% of ESPN leagues

Pearce has now played five games at second base, meaning he should be gaining eligibility for the middle infield any day now. Pearce hasn't really been able to put anything together so far this year, but the fact that he can be played in the middle infield, corner infield, and outfield spots is enough value on its own, particularly in roto leagues.

Baller Move: Add in points leagues with 10+ leagues/add in roto leagues with 10+ teams

Jung-ho Kang (PIT)--Owned in 2.2% of leagues

The Pirates made a nice little investment in Kang in the offseason, and lately he's been trying to prove them wise. He's currently hitting .318 on the season, and is seven for his last 14 with three runs scored, a homer and a pair of RBIs. With him hitting this well and Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison looking positively lost at the plate, it's only a matter of time before his current utility role evolves into regular playing time. Strike while the iron is hot.

Baller Move: Add in points leagues with 10+ leagues/add in roto leagues with 10+ teams
