4 days agoSahith Theegala has been knocking on the door of his second PGA Tour victory in recent months. The current OWGR No. 11 has finished inside of the top-20 in eight of his 16 starts in the 2024 calendar year, including runner-up finishes at The Sentry and RBC Heritage. Like any rising star, he does struggle with volatility, as evidenced by the finish positions over his last six starts reading T12, CUT, T12, T52, CUT, 2. It's difficult to tell if he'll end up being a solid course fit at Pinehurst this week, as he ranks 18th in total driving and 14th in weighted approach play over the last 24 rounds, yet 100th in weighted around-the-green play and 79th in scrambling. Theegala has also missed the cut in two of his last three US Open appearances, but he did post a T12 in his most recent start at the PGA Championship. Fantasy managers choosing to embrace Theegala's volatility and upside may wish to choose the route of limited exposure this week.

4 days agoTony Finau will likely be a popular option for the US Open this week, and rightfully so. The 34-year-old Tour star is having an excellent year, having only missed one cut to go along with eight top-20 finishes in his 15 starts in the 2024 calendar year. He's also gained over five strokes from tee-to-green in his last three events, and his inconsistent putter has started to show significant signs of improvement. Finau should be a solid course fit for Pinehurst as well, as he ranks 25th in total driving, third in weighted approach play, first in lag putting, fifth on long courses, and 11th on hard courses over the last 24 rounds. Finau is a six-time PGA Tour winner, and a Major victory remains one of the only missing pieces on his career resume. While his last top-10 Major finish was over two years ago at the 2021 PGA Championship, it wouldn't be out of the question to see Finau check that final box this weekend.

4 days agoWithout a doubt, Xander Schauffele has been the second-best golfer in the world this season next to Scottie Scheffler. The 30-year-old Tour star has been dominant in 2024, making every single cut and posting nine top-10 finishes in just 15 starts this calendar year, including his first Major victory at the PGA Championship less than a month ago. Equally as impressive, Schauffele has six top-10 finishes in his seven career US Open starts, with a 14th place finish in 2022 being his only non-top-10 result. He should continue this elite level of performance at this year's rendition, as he ranks fourth in total driving, fourth in weighted approach play, fifth in scrambling, seventh in putting, sixth in bogey avoidance, and top-15 in long and difficult courses over the last 24 rounds. Schauffele should be a near-lock for fantasy managers and top-10 bettors at Pinehurst this week.

5 days agoLike most LIV players, Dean Burmester is a tough read thanks to the limited stats available for the Saudi-backed league. The play he demonstrated at The PGA Championship was impressive, as he finished T12 and ranked inside the top 15 for the event in strokes gained around the green (+0.66), on approach (+1.25), and tee to green (+2.34). However, most of his performances on the LIV circuit this season have been mediocre, which doesn't bode well for arguably the toughest test in golf. At $9,100 on FanDuel, it is a pretty penny to spend on a guy with such limited knowledge of where his game stands. Pinehurst will be a much different animal than Valhalla in almost every sense, making Burmester an easy fade this week.

5 days agoJon Rahm (foot) has withdrawn from the upcoming 2024 U.S. Open. Rahm made the announcement on social media via his X account, stating in part, "After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long-term health to withdraw from this week's U.S. Open Championship". ESPN's Marty Smith reported that Rahm is dealing with a sore on his left foot, and the Spaniard was visibly in pain at times during last week's LIV Houston event. Formerly the world's top-ranked golfer, Rahm made the jump to LIV ahead of the 2024 season and has not been a factor in either of this year's major championships.

5 days agoAlex Noren has always been known for his strong approach play, but it's been his improved around-the-green numbers that have seen him place in the top-25 in all but one of his last 10 events on the PGA Tour. The Sweden native is typically known for firing low numbers at scoring-friendly tracks, but this new element to his game could allow him to hang around during the tough stretches in major conditions, allowing him to birdie a few important holes down the stretch to stay in contention. It would be ridiculous to hint at Noren winning this event in his Pinehurst debut at 41 years of age, but at $6,900 on DraftKings a top-10 finish would be quite valuable. Noren appears to be a strong GPP play for those who are making multiple DFS tournament lineups for the U.S. Open this week.

5 days agoAs we cruise into the summer stretch of golf in 2024, it's safe to say that Dustin Johnson had a surprisingly rough spring stretch, as he placed in the top 10 on the LIV Tour just once since his win on February 10, missed the cut at The Masters, and placed T43 at the PGA Championship a few weeks ago. The 39-year-old has lost his approach touch of late, and his usually clutch putting hasn't been able to save him like we're used to. However, Johnson does have a T4 finish in 2014 to hang his hat on here at Pinehurst No. 2, so perhaps this tough track is the jump-start the South Carolina native needs to get back on track. Fantasy managers get a nice discount on DJ, as he's going for just $7,400 on DraftKings. However, there's plenty of risk baked into that price, and the upside we saw in his T10 finish at LA Country Club last year seems much further than a season away at this point.

5 days agoJordan Spieth has placed in the top 20 just twice since February, and the reason behind it has been shocking, to say the least. The 13-time PGA Tour winner has struggled on the greens, around the greens, and on approach throughout much of 2024 thus far. It's hard to imagine these woes magically heal at what should be a tough Pinehurst No. 2 track, so despite his T17 finish in 2014, daily fantasy managers will find him at a crazy-low $7,900 price tag on DraftKings. While this type of course is usually one that brings out the best in the 30-year-old, it's tough to imagine playing Spieth in cash-game contests. However, if you're looking for low-owned upside, it might be worth taking a flier on the Texas native with the understanding that this course could eat him alive if he's unable to right the ship on Thursday and Friday in North Carolina.

5 days agoTommy Fleetwood hasn't won on American soil yet this season, but he does have a Dubai Invitational trophy to show for his hard work, along with just one missed cut in 2024. While the 33-year-old's approach and putting games come and go like an English rain storm, his around-the-green and off-the-tee consistency has afforded him a high floor and high ceiling each week he tees it up. Fleetwood will be making his way to Pinehurst No. 2 for the first time, but the course fits his game well, and he's quietly shown up well in difficult major conditions before. A price of $8,500 seems fair for the Englishman in what should be a chipping and putting contest this week.

5 days agoOf the five major events hosted on American soil between this season and last, Bryson DeChambeau has placed 20th or better in four of them, and three of those finishes have been sixth or higher. Although he hasn't won a major since the 2020 US Open, the 30-year-old has started to become a force to be reckoned with at tougher courses. A dried out Pinehurst No. 2 should definitely play difficult, especially around the greens, where DeChambeau has really improved his game, as displayed in his recent runner-up masterpiece at Valhalla. If the California native can be disciplined on his chip shots once again, excel with his strong putting ability, and take advantage of the limited rough around Pinehurst, he could once again find himself fighting for some major hardware come Sunday afternoon in North Carolina.
