2 days agoNew York Islanders forward Matt Martin will not dress for Game 5 of the team's first-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday due to a lower-body injury. Martin missed Game 4 on Saturday and was replaced by forward Simon Holmstrom. "Still the same. Day to day," Islanders head coach Patrick Roy said Monday. "He's a leader on our team, so guys want to be around him for sure." The veteran appeared in 57 regular-season games in the 2023-24 campaign, notching four goals and eight points along with 43 penalty minutes in just 9:19 of ice time per game. He was held off the scoresheet through the first three games of the season.Source: NHL.com
2 days agoThe Cleveland Browns signed veteran center Brian Allen, according to his agency. The 28-year-old was selected with the No. 111 overall pick (fourth round) by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2018 NFL Draft and played in 50 games (32 starts) for the organization. However, his role in L.A. faded over the last two seasons, as he started just seven games in 2022 due to injuries and did not log a start in 2023 after losing the position battle to Coleman Shelton. He'll likely compete with third-year center Dawson Deaton for the backup center job behind Ethan Pocic in Cleveland this year.Source: NFL.com
2 days agoMiami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) will make another minor-league rehab start this week before possibly joining the big-league club. Garrett resumed his rehab assignment on April 26 with Triple-A Jacksonville and threw three-plus innings in a 59-pitch outing. He was on track for a return before experiencing "dead arm" during his April 15 bullpen session, which was unrelated to his previous left-shoulder impingement, according to manager Skip Schumaker. The 26-year-old southpaw has yet to debut in the big leagues in 2024 but should be picked up off the waiver wire and stashed in deeper mixed fantasy leagues if he's available after he broke out for the Fish in 2023. Given all of the injuries to Miami's starters this year, Garrett will undoubtedly be inserted into the rotation immediately when he comes off the injured list.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoWinnipeg Jets defenseman Brenden Dillon (hand) and forward Vladislav Namestnikov (cheekbone) will both be out for Tuesday's Game 5 versus the Colorado Avalanche. Dillon suffered a lacerated hand in an altercation in Game 3 while Namestnikov was struck in the face by a deflected Nate Schmidt point shot in Game 4 in Colorado on Sunday. Defenseman Colin Miller, acquired in a trade with the Devils on March 8, will make his series debut in Dillon's absence while Cole Perfetti will make his NHL postseason debut in place of Namestnikov. The Jets need a win on Tuesday to avoid elimination.Source: NHL.com
2 days agoMiami Marlins third baseman Jake Burger (intercostal) will begin his minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday with Triple-A Jacksonville, according to manager Skip Schumaker. Burger has been doing full on-field workouts since April 26 in Miami after exiting the top of the fourth inning in an April 14 game against the Atlanta Braves with a left-oblique strain. He suffered a left-oblique strain last year, and he said this injury felt similar to that one. Burger is expected to come off the injured list on the team's upcoming road trip, which begins in Oakland against the A's this Friday. Emmanuel Rivera has been seeing regular playing time at the hot corner with Burger sidelined, but Burger should take over everyday duties when he returns. The 28-year-old was hitting .228 (13-for-57) with three home runs and 15 RBI at the time of his injury.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoLong-time NFL defensive back Chris Harris Jr. is retiring after 12 seasons. The 34-year-old was originally undrafted out of Kansas in the class of 2011 and played nine years with the Denver Broncos, two years with the Los Angeles Chargers, and one year with the New Orleans Saints. The four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro selection compiled 621 tackles, six sacks, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 22 interceptions, and 101 pass deflections in 172 career games. He started opposite Aqib Talib for the legendary 2015 Broncos' defense that won Super Bowl 50 in Peyton Manning's final year in the NFL. Harris is not a Hall of Fame candidate on paper, but he enjoyed a spectacular career, especially considering he went undrafted.Source: NFL.com
2 days agoMiami Marlins right-hander Sixto Sanchez is serving as the opener on Tuesday in the series opener against the Colorado Rockies. It will be Sanchez's second straight appearance as the team's opener after he allowed three earned runs on five hits while walking one in just 2 2/3 innings last Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves. This matchup should be much more forgiving for the 25-year-old, but he's still not a recommended fantasy streamer because he's unlikely to go deep enough to qualify for a win or quality start. The Dominican hurler finally made it back to the big leagues this year after years of dealing with arm injuries, but so far he's underwhelmed with a 7.20 ERA and 1.70 WHIP while walking four and striking out six in 10 innings over eight appearances (one start).Source: MLB.com - Christina De Nicola
2 days agoThe Baltimore Ravens have picked up the fifth-year option on linebacker Odafe Oweh, the team announced on X. The No. 31 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is now under contract with Baltimore through the 2025 season. Though Oweh's first 45 NFL games, he has racked up 99 tackles (73 solo), 13 sacks, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, one pass deflection, and 14.5 run stuffs. The former Penn State Nittany Lion hasn't been a star since entering the league, but he's a productive rotational pass rusher on a strong defense. He might see more action this year after the departure of Jadeveon Clowney.Source: Baltimore Ravens
2 days agoMiami Marlins shortstop Tim Anderson (thumb) is not in the team's starting lineup on Tuesday against the visiting Colorado Rockies. It's not much of a surprise after Anderson suffered a mild left-thumb sprain in Monday's contest. While it doesn't appear to be an injury that will send the shortstop to the injured, the 30-year-old could end up missing a few days at least. The Marlins consider him day-to-day for now. Vidal Brujan is starting at the 6 on Tuesday and will hit eighth against Rockies right-hander Ryan Feltner. Anderson's surprising fall from grace last year with the Chicago White Sox has so far carried over to 2024 in his first year in Miami, as he's currently hitting .221 (21-for-95) with no home runs, five RBI and three stolen bases. Brujan will be a low-upside DFS sleeper in the eight-hole against a pitcher he's never faced.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoSami Valimaki has not played on the PGA Tour in more than a month. The golfer from Finland has played nine times on the tour in 2024. He has made cuts in five events including a runner-up at the Mexico Open in February. One concern with Valimaki is driving accuracy which is only 61.52% (101st overall). His birdie average ranks 110th at 3.79 per round and this week in Texas is a course where birdies are mandatory. Valimaki did fire a 267 on the Vidanta course in Mexico. The Finnish golfer will need to shoot four rounds in the 60's again to have any chance this weekend. Source: PGA Tour
2 days agoThe CJ Cup Byron Nelson could be a springboard for Chan Kim. Born in South Korea, the American golfer has had an interesting past golfing on various international tours. He won eight times on the Japanese tour but twice on the Korn Ferry tour. His win in Boise and second overall in points gave him his PGA Tour card. He impressed at the Valero Texas Open and at the Corales Puntacana Championship with final rounds of 69 and 65 respectively. Consecutive Top 15 results bode well for a golfer who has been positive in strokes gained to putting and landing on greens better than 70% the past few events. Source: PGATour.com
2 days agoThird baseman Gio Urshela (hamstring) is traveling with the Detroit Tigers for their six-game road trip as he gets closer to a return from injury. Urshela is going through hitting and defensive drills, while also continuing to run as he looks to return from a right-hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined since April 19. He's currently on the 10-day injured list. Before the injury, Urshela was the Tigers' everyday third baseman and was slashing .298/.310/.333 with six RBI. In place of Urshela, Detroit has been starting Matt Vierling at third base. Once Urshela returns from injury, he will resume being the everyday third baseman, but despite that, he is under 5 percent owned in Yahoo and ESPN fantasy leagues.Source: MLB
2 days agoThe Milwaukee Brewers are set to call up prospect Tyler Black. The infielder is the Brewers' No. 4 ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline. Black has been hitting well as of late, as in his last 17 games, he's slashing 328/.425/.612 with five home runs and three stolen bases. Black has been primarily playing first and third base in the minors but is expected to challenge Jake Bauers for time at first base. Bauers has struggled as he's slashing .200/.250/.633 with two home runs. If Black can get consistent playing time, he is a viable fantasy option due to his on-base ability. Black is not on the 40-man roster so a corresponding move will need to be made by the Brewers.Source: MLB
2 days agoBoston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk appears to be back in the lineup for Tuesday's Game 5 versus the Toronto Maple Leafs. The rear guard didn't stay out late during Tuesday's morning skate while Derek Forbort, Kevin Shattenkirk, Jakub Lauko, and Linus Ullmark did. It appears Grzelcyk will take Shattenkirk's spot in the lineup. The 30-year-old didn't appear in either of the two games in Toronto after playing in the series' first two games in Boston. For the season, Grzelcyk tallied two goals and 11 points on 59 shots across 63 games, blocking 76 shots while adding a plus-13 rating to his ledger. The Bruins can win the series with a victory on Tuesday on home ice.Source: Fluto Shinzawa
2 days agoAdam Schenk was set up well for the final round at the RBC Heritage. Unfortunately, the American golfer fired a 73 which knocked him down to a tie for 49th. In his previous five tournaments, Schenk has shot at 71 or worse in four of them. His only good fourth round came at the Valero where he buckled down with a 67. Not surprisingly, that was Schenk's only Top 5 result of 2024. This long course in Texas is set up for birdies. Winners in the last five years have been in the 261-263 range. The last time Schenk truly put four solid rounds together was at the Par-73 Sentry in January. Source: PGATour.com
2 days agoRico Hoey has struggled this year on the PGA Tour. In 11 events, the golfer from the Philippines has only made the cut five times. He does have one Top 25 result (a T-14 at the Valero Texas Open). Furthermore, he has made the cut in five of the previous six events that do not feature a pairing. One concern is those final rounds where he shot a 72 or worse in four of them. However, Hoey did fire a 68 at the Corales Puntacana Championship. The long 7.488-yard course is usually a birdie magnet. Hoey must putt better than his overall 181st on tour indicates (-0.9 strokes gained). That number has trended close to positive the past few events.Source: PGATour.com
2 days agoThe Minnesota Twins have activated right-hander Jhoan Duran (oblique), who has missed the start of the season due to an oblique injury. Last season, the right-hander had 27 saves with a 2.45 ERA. Duran is one of the top closers in fantasy baseball and is expected to resume his role as the closer after his two-game rehab stint in Triple-A, as his fastball clocked in at an average of 101.8 mph. In a corresponding move, the Twins have designated right-hander Matt Bowman for assignment. Bowman had a 2.35 ERA in five games in 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs out of the bullpen.Source: MLB
2 days agoWashington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie is unsure if he will be able to keep playing next season due to recurring issues with his back. Back injuries along with a concussion limited the veteran to just 52 regular-season games in the 2023-24 campaign. "I'd love to play next year, but I will need to come back with somewhat of a guarantee that my back won't be -- it's hard putting everyone through the situation," Oshie said on Tuesday. "From my family at home to the team trying to figure out a lineup to young guys getting called up and going down, I'd like to find just an answer and a fix to the problem before I make another run at it." Oshie was limited to just 12 goals and 25 points in his 52 games and notched just one assist in the team's first-round sweep at the hands of the New York Rangers.Source: NHL.com
2 days agoHouston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick is dealing with soreness in his hamstring. Astros manager Joe Espada said it is a day-to-day injury for the time being. McCormick is slashing .236/.325/.278 this season with 8 RBIs. With McCormick out of the lineup, Joey Loperfido will be getting some starts in the outfield, the manager revealed. Loperfido was expected to play some first base due to the struggles of Jose Abreu, but will now get some reps in the outfield due to the injury to McCormick. In the minors, Loperfido slashed .287/.393/.713 with 13 home runs in 25 games before the callup and is a fantasy option due to his power.Source: MLB
2 days agoToronto Maple Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren (undisclosed) will draw back into the lineup for Game 5 on Tuesday versus the Boston Bruins. The Swede didn't dress for Game 4 on Saturday, as head coach Sheldon Keefe said Liljegren wasn't 100 percent healthy as the reasoning for the scratch. It doesn't appear Liljegren agrees with that notion. "I don't know, I feel good," Liljegren said. "I was a bit surprised (to come out), but it is what it is." Liljegren is expected to take the spot of T.J. Brodie, who drew in for the first time in the series on Saturday. The 2017 first-round pick turns 25 years old on Tuesday and notched three goals and 23 points on 62 shots on goal with another 116 blocks across 55 games this season.Source: David Alter

2 days agoThe Colorado Rockies placed outfielder Nolan Jones (back) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 29) with a lower-back strain. With Jones going to the IL, Colorado selected the contract of outfielder Jordan Beck to the major league roster, and left-hander pitcher Lucas Gilbreath has been transferred to the 60-day injured list. This season, Jones is slashing .170/.243/.277 with one home run, as he last played on April 28 and went 1-for-2 with one strikeout. Beck is the Rockies No. 4 prospect, per MLB pipeline, will likely play everyday while Jones is on the IL.Source: MLB
2 days agoToronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll is expected to be the team's starting goaltender for Tuesday's Game 5 against the Boston Bruins. Woll didn't take part in the morning skate while both Ilya Samsonov and Martin Jones did, suggesting Woll will indeed be between the pipes for his first start of the series. Woll replaced Samsonov for the third period of Game 4 on Saturday and turned aside all five shots he faced in his team's 3-1 loss. The 25-year-old took over the starting role from Samsonov early in the season but suffered a high-ankle sprain in early December and missed nearly three months. He worked to a 2.94 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage across 25 regular-season appearances.Source: David Alter
2 days agoToronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews (illness) is a game-time decision for Tuesday's Game 5 contest against the Boston Bruins. The superstar has been dealing with an illness that forced him out of the third period of Saturday's 3-1 Game 4 loss. "Obviously he was on the ice today, so he's working through things to try to make himself available to play," Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said. "No determination at this time." The head coach declined to answer when asked if there is something else other than the illness bothering Matthews. Matthews led the league with 69 regular-season goals but has just a single tally through the first four games of this series.Source: NHL.com
2 days agoMiami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said that head coach Mike McDaniel had been bugging him to draft Virginia wide receiver Malik Washington for multiple rounds. "Your rookie year can be very productive if you're a pro, which I know you can be immediately because you're going to have the opportunity," McDaniel told Washington. The Dolphins ultimately took the wideout in the sixth round of this year's NFL draft at 184th overall. Washington caught 111 passes for 1,384 yards and nine touchdowns in his only season with Virginia in 2023. He could have an immediate role for Miami in his rookie year, and his after-the-catch ability make him intriguing in the Dolphins' explosive offense. However, with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle commanding most of the looks from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, it's hard to envision Washington making a big rookie-year impact in fantasy in 2024.Source: King Of Phinland
2 days agoThe Jacksonville Jaguars released kicker Joey Slye on Tuesday. The Jaguars signed Slye in free agency in March, but he's now a free agent after the team selected kicker Cam Little in the sixth round of this year's NFL draft. Little and Riley Patterson figure to compete for the starting kicking duties in Jacksonville this summer in training camp. The 28-year-old Slye will now look for work elsewhere after making 79.2 percent of his 24 field-goal attempts over 17 games with the Washington Commanders in 2023. He also made 32 of his 35 extra-point attempts. For his career, Slye has made 82.3 percent of his field-goal attempts while making 88.5 percent of his extra points in five NFL seasons with the Commanders, Panthers, Texans and 49ers.Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
2 days agoLos Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay sees similarities between rookie running back Blake Corum and Kyren Williams, which is part of the reason why the Rams took Corum in the third round of this year's NFL draft. McVay also said that Williams will be a "great mentor" for Corum as he enters the NFL. The 23-year-old Corum was a big reason why Michigan won the national championship this past season, and he finished his time for the Wolverines with 3,736 rushing yards on 675 carries for 58 total touchdowns. The 5-foot-8, 205-pounder is more of a pounder than a straight speed guy, but he should complement Williams well. Williams will remain the team's primary pass-catching back in 2024, but the addition of Corum to LA's backfield is ultimately bad news for his fantasy upside this fall after he broke out for managers in 2023.Source: TheRams.com - Stu Jackson
2 days agoLos Angeles Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins (Achilles), who suffered a season-ending torn Achilles in 2023 while with the Baltimore Ravens, said he's "100 percent now." Dobbins had 805 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 134 carries for the Ravens in his rookie year. But since then, he suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2021, played in just eight games in 2022 with another knee injury and missed all of last year with his Achilles tear. He'll be joining former Ravens RB Gus Edwards and offensive coordinator Greg Roman in LA in 2024. The familiarity with Roman is definitely good for Dobbins as he attempts to return from yet another devastating injury, but the presence of Edwards and Dobbins' extensive injury history will make him a pretty big fantasy risk with the Bolts. At best, the 25-year-old will probably be a touchdown-dependent RB3/flex for fantasy managers.Source: NFL.com - Nick Shook
2 days agoWill Zalatoris has announced his withdrawal from the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch this week after experiencing a flare-up in his back. Zalatoris had been recovering from a back injury that included two herniated discs, which forced him to pull out of the 2022 FedEx Cup playoffs and eventually required surgery to repair. Zalatoris has had a strong year with three top-10 and two top-five finishes, currently ranking 16th in the FedEx Cup standings. Nick Watney will replace Zalatoris in the field.Source: PGA Tour
2 days agoThe St. Louis Cardinals moved starting pitcher Drew Rom (biceps) to the 60-day injured list on Tuesday to make room for pitcher Kyle Leahy as the 27th man for Tuesday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. Rom is dealing with a left-biceps injury and is scheduled to visit with Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas on Tuesday. Now that the 24-year-old left-hander is on the 60-day injured list, he won't be eligible to return to the Cardinals' bullpen until at least late May. The former fourth-round selection by the Baltimore Orioles in 2018 went 1-4 in his big-league debut in St. Louis last year and had a rough 8.02 ERA (5.75 FIP) and 2.08 WHIP with 19 walks and 32 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings over his eight starts. Rom showed plenty of strikeout potential in the minors, but his control has also been lacking.Source: Belleville News - Jeff Jones
