Manuel Margot 2021 Fantasy Outlook: Don't Overspend On His Potential
4 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Manuel Margot has consistently contributed to one fantasy baseball category throughout his short MLB career, and that's stolen bases. He's also added unexpected power occasionally with two seasons of more than 10 home runs. But in 2020, his power essentially disappeared -- he hit just one homer with an .083 ISO -- while he continued racking up steals (12). There could be some silver lining for his lack of power, though, as Margot's soft-hit rate on fly balls dropped nearly 10 percentage points between 2019 and 2020, while his hard-hit rate rose from 31.7% to 35.1%. His wRC+ on fly balls likely dropped from 79 to eight because he used the middle of the field too often (35.0% in '19 to 48.6% in '20). He's only 26 years old and moved around the outfield more than ever for Tampa last year, so it'd be nice to see him stick at one position and get settled in with the Rays. He's got upside, but his depressed power will keep his perceived value (ADP of 260) low. Margot has that boom-or-bust quality that fantasy managers typically look for late in drafts.
