Kolten Wong Could Lose More Playing Time
2 years agoSeattle Mariners second baseman Kolten Wong is in danger of losing playing time as he continues to struggle in 2023. Through 32 games, the veteran infielder is slashing just .177/.259/.231 in 108 plate appearances. Of second basemen with 100 plate appearances, he's tied for the lowest wins above replacement (minus-0.6). Wong's wRC+ is the lowest of all second basemen. The 32-year-old has just two hits in his last 21 trips to the plate. He also ranks near the bottom in hard-hit rate, average exit velocity on balls in play, barrel rate and expected batting average. On Wednesday, rookie Jose Caballero got the start at the keystone over Wong, and that could be a trend that continues. Caballero has hit .289/.365/.356 with three doubles, four RBI and three steals in 52 plate appearances.
