Helcris Olivarez Signs Minors Deal With Red Sox
1 year agoThe Boston Red Sox signed left-hander Helcris Olivarez (shoulder) to a minor-league deal on Thursday, according to a source. It's unclear if the deal includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Olivarez is a former highly ranked prospect in the Colorado Rockies system. The 23-year-old southpaw had 61 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings in Rookie ball in 2019 and was added to the Rockies' 40-man roster before the 2021 season to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. He was ranked as high as high as the team's No. 11 prospect due to a fastball that can reach triple digits. Olivarez had major shoulder surgery late in 2022 and didn't pitch at all in 2023, but the Red Sox are taking a flier on his pure stuff.
