The San Diego Padres traded outfielder Franchy Cordero and pitcher Ronald Bolanos to the Kansas City Royals on July 16 in exchange for left-handed reliever Tim Hill. Cordero was logjammed in San Diego as he battled outfielders Josh Naylor and Edward Olivares for a platoon role. With Olivares excelling in summer camp and top prospect Taylor Trammell waiting in the wings, Cordero was trending down. The 25-year-old now moves to Kansas City and Fangraphs already pencils him in as starting center fielder. A standout athlete with strong advanced metrics, Cordero’s playing outlook just got brighter if he can avoid strikeouts and stay healthy.
