New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has added a splitter to his arsenal, throwing the pitch for the first time in his career against the Blue Jays on Thursday. At 91.4 mph, Chapman’s splitter would be the fastest among pitchers who have thrown at least 250 pitches this season, and the pitch generated a swinging-strike in its only appearance on Thursday. It’s not clear how Chapman plans to use his splitter going forward and the pitch probably won’t maintain a 100% swinging-strike rate, but it’s encouraging to see Chapman add another weapon to his arsenal, and the splitter could help the flamethrower stave off a potential velocity-related performance decline.--Sam Chinitz
