Nationals Max Scherzer Throws No-Hitter Against Pirates

Max Scherzer had to settle for a no-hitter today against the Pirates. That is how dominant he was today.

After throwing eight innings of perfection, Scherzer had a 2-2 count against Jose Tabata, who was pinch-hitting in the pitchers spot. Throwing a pinch inside, Tabata seemed to have leaned his elbow in a bit, getting hit with the pinch and breaking up the perfect game. He rebounded by getting Josh Harrison to fly out to end the game, leaving something to be desired despite the celebration on the field.

Ironically, according to the Bill James-invented Game Score, this was not even Scherzer's best game of the season. He had a 97 score today, while in his previous start against the Brewers was a 98. This is the second no-hitter for the Nationals after Jordan Zimmerman threw one in 2014. This is also the second of the season following the one thrown by Giants starter Chris Heston earlier this month.

This past offseason, Scherzer signed a seven-year, $210 million deal, improving the already stellar Nationals rotation. Scherzer had 10 strikeouts on the day, and has no lowered his season ERA to 1.76. His next start will come against the Phillies on Friday.
