Recent Update

3/11:New York Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka gave up four runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings in his only Spring Training start (March 2nd against the Braves), but he is not worried about his results. “Fastball was flat, things weren’t coming out of my hand right. I think the results tell it all.” Even though Tanaka was a bit rough of himself, scouts had a better picture of the game (in which he allowed a home run to Ronald Acuna). “Body looked good, arm action looked fine,” one opposing team scout said. “Just threw some ‘get over’ breaking balls. Really no sliders or splits that tax the arm. Wasn’t cutting it loose at all. I’d be encouraged if I was [pitching coach Larry] Rothschild.” Tanaka seemed to be returning to form at the end of the 2017 season, posting a 3.77 ERA after the All-Star break as opposed to a 5.47 showing prior to the Midsummer Classic, and surrendered just two runs across 20 innings in the postseason, striking out 18. Combining his resurgence in the second half with his aforementioned sensational postseason bodes well for his chances of a bounce-back 2018 season.--Chris Zolli - RotoBaller
