Michael Wacha's Poor End to 2015 May Indicate Problems to Come

Taken as a whole, Michael Wacha's 2015 was a huge success. Unfortunately, there are several factors that indicate the good times about to go off the rails again, not unlike a certain train of crazy.

If you saw him pitch in September and October, his ranking as our 31st-overall starting pitcher might seem a little high. In a span of five weeks (plus an awful NLDS start), he experienced the roughest patch of his MLB career. Jeff Sullivan of Fangraphs makes a very compelling case that it is mostly mechanics. He explains that when Wacha is at his best, he is throwing strikes over 65% of the time. Only six times in his career has that rate dropped below 60%, three of which came during his last four starts of 2015. If mechanics are the sole cause, Wacha's 2016 could be a perfectly pleasant ride. However, if injuries occur or his mechanics break down again, his value will almost certainly be derailed.
