ANALYSIS: The Cardinals have called up two top prospects this week: highly touted Alex Reyes, and former Florida State Seminole Luke Weaver. The awesome thing about Weaver is his potential to be an inning-eating workhorse as demonstrated by his career history. In his final season at FSU in 2014, Weaver made 16 starts and tossed 106.1 innings for an average of 6.7 innings per outing, with a 2.62 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and just 1.95 BB/9. In 2015 at A+ Palm Beach, he made 19 starts and tossed 105.1 innings for an average of 5.5 innings per outing, with a 1.62 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and just 1.62 BB/9. In 2016 Weaver has made 13 starts for Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis and pitched 83 innings. He has averaged 6.4 innings per start, with a 1.30 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, 1.30 BB/9, and and a much improved 9.98 K/9. Weaver has the command and durability to go the distance as a starter for the Cardinals, and given his career history, it doesn't look like he is likely to struggle.
