Fantasy Baseball Impact Of The New York Yankees Claiming Pitcher Luke Weaver Off Waivers

According to a tweet from the New York Yankees’ official X account, the American League East club has claimed veteran right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

Additionally, according to the tweet, the Yankees also transferred starting pitcher Nestor Cortes to the 60-day injured list.

Weaver has appeared in 26 games this season split between the Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners, making 22 starts and logging 110.1 innings in the process. He’s collected 93 strikeouts in 2023 while surrendering 37 walks. Home runs have been a bit of an issue for the right-hander as he’s allowed 26 so far.

Moving forward, Weaver will likely give the Yankees some additional pitching depth down the stretch. It remains to be seen just what role the American League East franchise will utilize him in. It is worth noting that 21 of the hurler’s 26 starts came with Cincinnati as he mostly pitched out of the bullpen for the Mariners in his time in Seattle.

Either way, given the home runs surrendered this season by Weaver, fantasy managers are likely better off looking elsewhere for rotation options down the stretch.

In addition to the home runs allowed, the former Reds and Mariners pitcher has allowed opposing batters to log a .390 wOBA, a .364 xwOBA, a .418 xwOBAcon, and a 41.7% hard-hit rate -- not to mention a 9.7% barrel rate -- against him so far this season.
