Who is Khris Davis?
The Milwaukee Brewers needed someone to take over in left field last season after Ryan Braun was suspended for the last 65 games of the season. That player turned out to be Khris Davis, and his 2013 output has allowed the Brewers to move Braun to right field this season. Davis has the full-time job in left field and for people playing fantasy baseball, it means looking at Davis as a viable option to draft this season. He is a classic sleeper candidate considering where he is getting drafted right now.
2014 Season Outlook
Davis is getting drafted on average around the 206th pick. That is way too late to be selecting a player who has the potential to hit 30 home runs and knock in 100 runs for the Brewers this season if given the right chance. He is being selected after Alejandro De Aza, who isn’t even scheduled to start this year. He is even being drafted after the player that Braun is replacing in right field, Norichika Aoki. This is a serious mistake. Davis hit 11 home runs in just 153 plate appearances last season. That averages out to 40+ home runs in a 162-game season. I will take my chances on a player like Davis who can produce those kinds of numbers while also hitting for a reasonable average.
Where To Draft Him
Davis has been solid this spring, batting .250 with 4 HR. The latest projected lineup has Davis hitting seventh which would be just an OK place for him to be successful, but if he ends up hitting sixth with Aramis Ramirez and Jonathan Lucroy ahead of him in the lineup, Davis will get a solid amount of chances to knock in runs in 2014. If Davis comes out of the chute hot though, the Brewers will need to shift their lineup around to get Davis more RBI opportunities. He may not hit 30 home runs but it is a safe bet that he hits at least 20 and that makes him someone that should be considered late in the draft with one of your final picks. It would be unwise to sleep on Davis this season.
