Kenley Jansen Activated From DL Saturday: Not Closer Right Away

Kenley Jansen will be activated from the DL on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The L.A. Dodgers closer hasn’t pitched at all this season. He’s been dealing with a foot injury after suffering an  avulsion fracture in his left foot in February.  Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly told the L.A. Times that Jansen will be eased back into the closer role.

The 27-year-old has been struggling during his rehab appearances with High-A Rancho Cucamonga. Over five appearances, the right-hander has allowed three runs and six hits in 4.1 innings.

“I’m not sure that he’s finished with what we want him to do,” Mattingly told the Daily News after the Dodgers’ 9-5 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday in regards to Jansen’s rehab assignments.

Jansen is coming off a career-season where he converted 44 saves for the Dodgers en route to a division championship.

The Dodgers have been dealing with injuries in the bullpen and the latest man to make saves has been Yimi Garcia. Even though he has only one save, he’s been dominant with a 0.63 ERA, .55 WHIP and a 23:4 K:BB ratio.

It’s Jansen’s job to lose eventually, but L.A. has backup in case it doesn’t work out.
