Is Joe Mixon Out for the 2025 Season?
Since mid-October, the Texans have not provided any major updates regarding his status for the second half. Last month, the team's general manager, Nick Caserio, described his status for the remainder of the season as "in limbo," which was not a great sign. Seeing that he has yet to make any progress since this update suggests the veteran RB will face a major uphill battle to return to action this season.
Given that he has yet to begin practicing, the 29-year-old still has significant steps to complete in his recovery plan. Due to the team's lack of updates, managers should not expect Mixon to return to the field during the regular season.

Joe Mixon 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
Since Mixon appears to be trending towards missing the remainder of these seasons, managers should not consider stashing him in any redraft formats. While managers and deeper leagues with multiple IR spots could still look to stash him, numerous other IR-eligible players have a more realistic timeline to return in the second half when compared to Mixon.
When looking at WRs, Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and Jayden Reed (collarbone) are both on the IR but could be earning a return to practice, which could put them in a position to return later in the season. Since Mixon has made no progress, he is several weeks behind their timeline at best.

Managers looking to target a running back should cut Mixon in favor of high upside handcuffs. Throughout the first half of the season, managers have seen many handcuffs take over the starting job and deliver high-end fantasy results, including Kimani Vidal, Kyle Monangai, and Rachaad White. Stashing similar players like Blake Corum, Isaiah Davis, and Ray Davis could provide much more upside than Mixon would if he were to return in the final month.
With Mixon sidelined, managers should expect rookie Woody Marks and veteran Nick Chubb to continue to lead the Houston backfield and operate in a near 50/50 committee split. Both options will continue to hold low-end RB2 upside/FLEX value for the second half.
