Is Clyde Edwards-Helaire Or Deneric Prince The RB2 For The Chiefs?

Who will be the RB2 for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024? Mike Fanelli takes a look at the credentials of each candidate to see who is likely to be the No. 2 running back.

The Kansas City Chiefs have won back-to-back Super Bowl championships. While Patrick Mahomes and the defense have played critical roles in both victories, the Chiefs have an underrated rushing attack.

Isiah Pacheco is the lead running back in Kansas City, totaling 830 or more rushing yards and at least five touchdowns in back-to-back seasons. However, the depth behind him is thin.

Yet, the Chiefs didn’t make any significant additions to their backfield in the offseason, leaving Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Deneric Prince to compete for the No. 2 running back role.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

Clyde Edwards-Helaire 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Unfortunately, Edwards-Helaire has been a massive fantasy football bust since the team used a first-round pick on him in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has seen his rushing total decline every year of his career, piling up only 223 yards and a touchdown last season. Yet, the Chiefs re-signed Edwards-Helaire to a one-year deal in free agency. He will have a limited role behind Pacheco.

Deneric Prince 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Prince has never had a rushing attempt in an NFL regular season game. The former Tulsa star was an undrafted free agent in 2023. He played in only two games as a rookie, totaling 15 snaps on special teams. However, Prince received first-team reps ahead of Edwards-Helaire earlier in training camp. While he could have a role in 2024, fantasy players shouldn’t get their hopes up for the second-year running back.

Is Clyde Edwards-Helaire Or Deneric Prince The RB2 For The Chiefs?

The Chiefs backfield behind Pacheco is a nightmare for fantasy players. Kadarius Toney has gotten snaps at running back, making the backfield an even larger fantasy headache. However, Edwards-Helaire is Pacheco’s handcuff. When the former Rutgers star missed time last season, Edwards-Helaire was the lead back for Kansas City.

Fantasy players should expect a similar situation in 2024. However, Edwards-Helaire and Prince have nearly zero fantasy value unless Pacheco misses significant time with an injury.
