Fantasy Football Running Back Player Outlooks
Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is coming off a historically great year in which he topped 2,000 rushing yards in only 16 games. The reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year totaled 345 rushes in the regular season, adding another 91 through four postseason games. One can't blame the Eagles for riding the hot hand, as he averaged 5.8 yards per carry behind a talented offensive line.
He tacked on 33 catches for 278 yards and a pair of TDs as well. Now 28 years old, Barkley has averaged 369 touches over the last three seasons, when you include the '24 playoff run. We're drafting him near the top of the first round with the hopes that endurance holds and the same unstoppable formula plays out.
But it would be irresponsible to overlook the workload concerns, even if the team is largely returning the same roster. Alas, most players have a downside to be aware of, so don't overthink yourself into knots given Barkley's elite, proven blueprint for success.

Bucky Irving, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers second-year running back Bucky Irving took over the lead role in the backfield after the Week 11 bye and didn't look back, winning fantasy leagues all over for managers. Irving finished his rookie season with 1,122 rushing yards and eight touchdowns while adding 392 receiving yards. The 22-year-old will split work with Rachaad White and Sean Tucker again, but figures to take the bulk of the workload after impressing down the stretch of the 2024 season.
Irving took 32% of the team's rush attempts after the Week 11 bye while White took 29% and Tucker took 10%. For Irving to pay off at cost, he is going to have to remain hyper-efficient on a per-touch basis, or he is going to have to grow the gap between himself and White. New offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard has already made comments noting that this is a committee, which could scare managers away from Irving's Round 2 ADP.

Kenneth Walker, Seattle Seahawks
2024 was a disappointing season for Kenneth Walker III. He posted career lows in rushing yards, yards per carry, and rushing touchdowns. Most of this can be explained by the fact that he missed six games nursing various injuries. One positive takeaway from Walker's 2024 was that his receiving usage saw a big boost. He posted career highs in targets, receptions, and receiving yards. This was an encouraging development given his perceived lack of ability as a pass catcher.
While Walker's 2024 rushing totals weren't great, he continued to post strong advanced metrics. Among 46 backs with 100+ carries, Walker finished third in PFF's elusive rating and ninth in missed tackles forced. Seattle also hired Klint Kubiak this offseason as their new offensive coordinator. He brings a rushing scheme where highly talented backs have consistently thrived throughout the years.
Perhaps the addition of Kubiak is what can finally unlock the next level of Walker's game. While there are some concerns given Walker's injuries, Seattle's offensive line, and the addition of Sam Darnold as quarterback, Kubiak's system has proven it can get the most out of talented backs. Walker certainly fits the bill. Playing for a new contract, Walker could be in line for a career year. He is a fine RB2 target in all fantasy drafts.

Jordan Mason, Minnesota Vikings
Jordan Mason enjoyed a nice 2024 season. He ran for a career-best 789 rushing yards while filling in for an injured Christian McCaffrey. Mason's advanced metrics were also quite good. Among 46 backs with 100+ carries, Mason finished third in Next Gen Stats rush yards over expected, 10th in PFF's elusive rating, and 19th in PFF's rushing grade. Clearly, the Minnesota Vikings took notice and acquired him in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. Minnesota also re-signed Aaron Jones to a two-year extension this offseason.
However, it's worth noting that Mason finished higher than Jones in each of the above metrics. Minnesota has also made it clear they want to lighten Jones' workload this season. Mason could be in line for a larger role than some think. At the very least, he is a great target later in drafts as a Jones handcuff.
Mason might offer some standalone value as a potential flex play. Mason's cost in drafts means gamers won't have to pay a high premium to draft him. At this price, there's not much downside. Mason has the potential to wildly outperform his ADP if the cards break his way.
