Cardinals Manager Expects Matt Holliday to Return With a Vengeance

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is predicting a "ridiculous" season from Matt Holliday as the slugger looks to put an injury-shortened 2015 behind him. He finished 2015 hitting .279 with four home runs and 35 RBI.

When he was on the field last year, Holliday was mostly himself. He started the season reaching base in 45 consecutive games, breaking Albert Pujols' Cardinal record set in 2008. He was voted to the NL All-Star team, capturing the third-most votes for NL outfielders. But he was distinctly not himself in the power department. After coming into the year with at least 20 home runs for nine consecutive seasons, his streak was easily dashed when he finished with a new career low (four). Matheny doesn't think age is the issue, saying it is just a matter of keeping Holliday on the field. As he was mostly himself before the right-quadriceps strain that landed him on the disabled list twice, we too are hedging our bets that Holliday can return to form.
