Legal Sports Betting in Tennessee
The Volunteer State legalized sports betting back in May 2019 but would have to wait until Nov. 1, 2020, to launch. The state is unique in not having any brick-and-mortar casinos. All wagers are placed online, with nine sportsbooks operating within the state as of April 2022.
Sportsbooks live in the state are Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Action 24/7, WynnBET, TwinSpires, Barstool, and Wagr, with each offering its own brand of betting and plenty of bonus offers for bettors to take advantage of. Others in the pipeline are Betly, Fubo, Bally Bet, and Superbook.
Tennesseans aged 21 and over (and those visiting the state!) can enjoy sign-up promotions for new accounts at these reputable sportsbooks. Read on for more information on Tennessee’s market and history.
Tennessee was not one of the states eagerly awaiting PASPA’s repeal, with no pending legislation awaiting the Supreme Court decision that came in May 2018. But roughly a year later, in June 2019, Tennessee officially legalized sports betting. The regulations took another year and a half to hammer out, but by November 2020 there were four sportsbooks live in the state. These were first regulated by the Tennessee Education Lottery. Tennessee’s Sports Wagering Advisory Council took over for the TEL once the calendar flipped to 2022.
With several professional sports teams, illustrious collegiate programs, and being the 16th most populous of the 50 U.S. states, Tennessee can provide bettors with all sorts of options for gambling. Even with only online wagering, Tennessee’s first month had $131 million in handle. Those figures have crept up and pushed over $300 million each month as 2021 turned to 2022.
Another unique aspect of Tennessee’s infrastructure is a mandatory 10% hold for sportsbooks. We said TN sportsbooks were handling over $300 million each month, meaning any money that they take in via wagers from customers. The hold is how much of that they, well, hold onto. This can impact the lines presented to bettors if a book needs to increase its hold, but it was meant to ensure tax revenue and dissuade bigger companies from monopolizing the market share.
How to Sports Bet in Tennessee
STEP ONE) Download a legal, licensed, and safe sportsbook app or visit their website.
As of April 2022, nine sportsbooks meet the legal, licensed, and safe criteria:
- Action 24/7 Sportsbook
- Barstool Sportsbook
- BetMGM Sportsbook
- Caesars Sportsbook
- DraftKings Sportsbook
- FanDuel Sportsbook
- TwinSpires Sportsbook
- Wagr Sportsbook
- WynnBET Sportsbook
Be aware of others from the black market trying to advertise to Tennesseans and claiming to be legal. If in doubt, check the Sports Wagering Advisory Council’s list on their site and look for SWAC banners on the sportsbook. And be sure to utilize the great promo offers through RotoBaller’s promo links.
STEP TWO) Register with the promo code and create your account
Head into the app or website, which you’ll be redirected to from our link, and register an account. You’ll need to provide personal information such as your name, date of birth, address, email, and more sensitive information like the last four digits of your social security number. This helps the sportsbook verify your identity and follow Know Your Customer protocols, which are part of the rigorous standards for holding a license.
Keep an eye out for the Promo Code field when signing up and be sure you grab our code. This nabs you the best promo code in the game.
STEP THREE) Make a deposit or play with the risk-free bets
With a verified account, you are ready for action. You can either build a bet slip with risk-free bets if applicable at that sportsbook, but most likely you are opening the cashier to make a deposit. This is also where plenty of the promotional value appears in the form of a deposit match. Check the terms of your deal and decide how much to put in. Remember to gamble responsibly!
While each sportsbook will have its own unique blend of payment methods available for deposit and withdrawal, you can usually count on some combination of major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard, online bank transfers, and PayPal.
STEP FOUR) Place your bets!
Your identity is confirmed and your bankroll is at the ready, so it’s time to wager. Navigate the menus to the sport of your choice and fill your bet slip out. The bet slip is where you’ll be able to enter the wager amount, see the odds in one place, and your potential payout.
In-Person Tennessee Sportsbooks
Tennessee has no commercial casinos and no current legislative initiatives to create them. All wagering is conducted through mobile/online channels.
