Week 9 Quarterback (QB) Rankings Analysis

By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)

Man, was Aaron Rodgers horrible last week or what? Even against an incredible defense, I don’t think anyone saw that coming. This week his consensus rank is QB7, lower than it was last week. While the Panthers are a tough defense, they don’t really come close to what the Broncos have done.

QBs average 7.6 fantasy points against the Broncos. Quarterbacks facing the Panthers average 12.3 points. The only notable QBs to face the Panthers were Russell Wilson (18 points) and a damaged Andrew Luck (14 points). Keep in mind they got to face Luke McCown instead of Drew Brees. I am confident Rodgers will be just fine.

One other QB I like this week? Peyton Manning. It’s certainly been an awful year for the aging great, but he has thrown for over 250 yards in five of seven games. I normally try to avoid narratives, but Peyton Manning is 283 yards shy of Brett Favre’s career passing yardage record.

You don’t think the coaches and Peyton himself want to see that record fall vs his former team? The Broncos will be aggressive in this game and I think we might see a little more good Peyton than usual. I have him in the top ten this week.

On the opposite sideline in that game will be Andrew Luck. Much like his predecessor in Indy, Luck has also had an awful season. His 54.9% completion percentage and NFL leading 12 interceptions (despite missing two games!) are both far worse than last year’s numbers.

He now faces the #1 defense that just shut down Aaron Rodgers? Yeah this could get ugly. I have him outside my top fifteen. If you think some mid-level QB might be a better option this week, you’re probably right.

One such QB that I like more than Luck this week is Jameis Winston. Not only because the Giants just gave up seven pass touchdowns last week in a show of truly pathetic defense, but because Jameis himself has played great.

Although his streak of games with 200 pass yards ended, Winston rushed for a touchdown last week to give a good fantasy performance. Over Winston’s last three games he has no interceptions and a 64.9% completion percentage. He should have a very high floor against the Giants.
