Volquez Named Royals Starter For Game 1

The Kansas City Royals have named Edinson Volquez the starter for Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night at home against the New York Mets.

The 32-year-old will make his seventh career postseason start and his first in the World Series. Volquez has been up and down this postseason in his first year with the Royals after playing with the Pittsburgh Pirates a season ago. In 2014, he allowed five runs to the San Francisco Giants in the NL Wild Card while suffering the loss. He’s been better this postseason although he has a 1-2 record.

The right-hander allowed five runs over two starts in the ALCS with a 1-1 record. Volquez only went 11 innings over those two starts. In one start against the Houston Astros in the ALDS, he allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings pitched. He’s a solid pitcher but his job is simply to get far enough in the game until the Royals’ bullpen takes over.

Volquez is on pace to start Game 5.
