Week 6 Tight End (TE) Rankings Analysis

By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)

News broke Thursday that Martellus Bennett hurt himself in practice and is now questionable for this week’s game. That’s a big bummer as the Lions have given up a touchdown to a tight end in four of five games this season. If he’s active, start him, but have another option ready just in case.

Antonio Gates made his triumphant return from suspension. With 11 targets that resulted in 9 catches and 2 touchdowns, Gates is definitely in must-start territory. I keep thinking the old man has to slow down but he keeps proving me wrong. He’ll definitely be a little up and down because he relies on touchdowns more than some other tight ends, but he will be involved enough on a weekly basis to be worth a start.

On the other end of the spectrum, Julius Thomas made a much quieter season debut. After reports that Thomas would not be limited in any way, he promptly played on just 50% of snaps and saw only two targets. I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising considering that he and Blake Bortles have had very little time to develop chemistry. I think Thomas is still a great touchdown threat, but I have him at TE11 because I want to see more targets and production.

I talked about Derek Carrier as a deep sleeper last week. He delivered with a touchdown. I think he can continue to be a very nice deep option. Even if Desean Jackson returns, the Redskins lack a big receiver to be an end zone threat. I think Carrier will continue to get touchdown opportunities. It certainly won’t happen every week, but he wouldn’t be a deep sleeper if that was the case!
