High-Confidence Strikeout Picks

All odds were current as of 8:00 AM

Carlos Rodon OVER 5.5 strikeouts (-135 Novig)

Multiple injuries delayed the start of Rodon's season, but he has come out of the gate in solid form since his debut. He has posted a 3.50 ERA across his first seven starts, with a healthy 27.2% strikeout rate. The walk rate is still a bit concerning at 13.2%, but he dialed it in for his last start, issuing just a single walk in five innings against the White Sox.

The lefty has recorded at least six strikeouts in five of his seven starts this season, and one of the misses came in his first start when his pitch count was limited to just 78.

Tonight, Rodon draws a plus matchup against the Tigers, who own a below-average 95 wRC+ against lefties. They have also struck out slightly more than league average at 22.7% when facing southpaws.

Rodon has thrown at least 93 pitches in each of his last five outings. If he can keep the walks in check as he did in his last outing, he should cruise over this number.

Shane Baz OVER 5.5 strikeouts (+108 Novig)

Baz has seen a notable drop in his strikeout rate from a season ago, and his swinging strikes are also down considerably. Most of that can be attributed to his decreased four-seam fastball usage in favor of a new sinker. The sinker is generating just an 8% whiff rate, compared to his four-seamer, which has produced a 17.7% whiff rate.

In his last start, Baz moved away from the sinker, throwing it just 3% of the time, while relying on his cutter at a 19% rate. A trend that led to him matching his season-high with nine strikeouts.

Regardless of which fastball Baz leans on tonight, he also has a curveball that generates above-average whiff rates. He has only recorded six or more strikeouts in six of his 15 starts, but there is reason for optimism tonight.

Baz draws a matchup against an Angels team that has been near the top of the league in whiffs for several seasons. They are currently tied for the top mark in baseball with a 24.9% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching.
