ANALYSIS: Washington Commanders rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt made a significant impact during the preseason and was not only able to earn a spot on the roster but also carve out a role in the backfield. Shortly before the regular season, the Commanders opted to trade their 2024 starter, Brian Robinson Jr., to the San Francisco 49ers, which further paved the way for Croskey-Merritt to take over the backfield.
Even though the Arizona product had a reserve role throughout most of camp, occasionally operating as the No. 2 or even the No. 4 running back, Croskey-Merritt was able to lead the team in carries during their Week 1 victory over the Giants. In this contest, Croskey-Merritt ran the ball 10 times for a team-high 82 yards and a score during his professional debut.
Veteran Austin Ekeler ran the ball just six times. However, Ekeler did see most of the passing work as he received three targets to Croskey-Merritt's one.
Even though Croskey-Merritt does not have a prominent receiving role, he will still have high fantasy value serving as the lead back in a potent offense. Fantasy managers in half-PPR formats should view him as a solid RB2/high-end flex option on Thursday when the Commanders face the Packers.
The more he grows accustomed to this offense, the larger his workload will grow. He has the potential to be a league-winner. Given his strong play in Week 1, he could see up to 15+ carries in this contest.
