What is up, RotoBallers! We are taking a stab at a fresh DFS article that focuses on weekend golf and who I like to make a move or remain steady through the final two rounds of this year's U.S. Open. Whether this becomes a regular post remains to be seen, but, for now, let's have fun with it and see if the diamonds can be found in the ultra-thick rough of Oakmont Country Club.

Play has been ruthlessly difficult over the first two days of this 125th U.S. Open. 10 players managed to post under-par scores on Thursday, including a bogey-free 66 from J.J. Spaun. Friday wasn't as kind, with only seven players able to post red figures, as only three men are beginning the third round under par.

The story so far has been exactly what many thought it would be regarding the course that has hosted this championship a record 10 times: ridiculously-fast greens and rough thicker than a Sonic milkshake. Sound approach play is a must, especially on the holes where players manage to find the fairway. Putting is the ultimate difference between under-par scores and just scraping by. However, with the weather slated to be a major factor over the next two days, what is needed to make it through this test could change.

The underlying goal of all professional golfers at the start of each week is to make it to this point in the tournament: the weekend. Nerves and stakes are ramped up on rounds three and four, providing for easily the most compelling action. Looking at guys who tend to stay resilient down the stretch is an easy place to start, but finding ones who can take control of the final two days is crucial for building contest-winning lineups.

Weather Outlook & Course Conditions

Things could get even dicier in Pennsylvania over the last two rounds, as rain and potential thunderstorms are forecasted to roll through the Oakmont area. Saturday looks more worrisome than Sunday, but rain and wind becoming a factor on an already brutal test could drive the finishing score over par by the tournament's end. This will be survival of the fittest, as most U.S. Opens are.

Weekend Golf Strategy

The first part of the job is done, but the hard work begins now as guys jockey for position on moving day and try to close out the week with an important victory. The most important thing to remember is that taking guys capable of making positive moves will be more beneficial than sticking it out with who's leading after two rounds, which means looking further down the leaderboard.

Most players need a mix of good approach play and getting hot with the putter to make a weekend charge. Bigger names who find themselves further back still command heavy ownership, so there is leverage to be had on other guys showing signs of life. Having an interest near the lead is also needed, but with 36 holes left, many players will struggle to stay there for the remainder of the event.

Favorite Play: Jon Rahm is the epitome of what works well at Oakmont this week, minus the putts falling. The Spaniard has gained over five shots on approach and has hit over 70% of his greens through the first two rounds. The flat stick has been uncharacteristically poor, especially for someone who owns a green jacket and is used to the slippery nature of these greens.

The incoming weather will certainly make things interesting for everyone in the field, but Rahm's ball striking should serve him well in tougher conditions, so long as his mindset doesn't tank him.

Favorite Play: Of anyone in this range, Collin Morikawa is the only player of the few who made the cut that makes sense heading into the weekend. He ranks fifth in the field in strokes gained on approach (+5.17) and driving accuracy (67.9%). His struggle has also been on the greens, losing over three strokes with the flat stick.

Given what's on deck over the next two days to crown the year's third major champion, Morikawa has the mental toughness to stay afloat. The putter has been fairly consistent this season, so I expect that part of his game to improve.

Favorite Play: Brooks Koepka should be licking his chops at seeing who's in front of him on the leaderboard. The only player ahead of him with any major championship pedigree is an aging Adam Scott. After a poor day on Friday with the driver, Koepka looks to be the one player who could strike fear in other players should he make a charge over the next two days.

The five-time major champion ranks inside the top 15 through two rounds in strokes gained on approach (+1.99) and tee to green (+3.44). Putting isn't even a major concern for me, but the larger importance will be that he regains a higher level of driving acumen that we're used to seeing.

Other Options: Viktor Hovland, Ben Griffin, Russell Henley

Favorite Play: Robert MacIntyre has grit, and that attribute has helped many players find success at U.S. Open setups, especially when weather plays a large factor. As his opening round can attest, Bobby Mac can get hot with the putter and become a real beast with the driver, gaining +2.48 on the greens and +1.42 off the tee. He struggled in the second round, but that hasn't been uncommon throughout the season. Round three and four scoring averages both sit below 70 for the Scotsman.

Favorite Play: Mackenzie Hughes has had a rough season for a guy who has been a factor at a couple of major championships in recent memory. He'll have another shot over the next two days after two rounds of poor putting have him in a tie for 36th. The flat stick is typically a strength for the Canadian, so I look for that to improve over the next two rounds.

Ball striking and short game have been the biggest strengths for Hughes, who's gained +3.34 strokes on approach, +2.67 strokes around the greens, and has hit 64.3% of fairways; all three metrics rank inside the top 20 in the field.
