NBA Power Rankings: Every Team's Starting Shooting Guard for the 2023-2024 Season

Today I’ll be ranking the starting shooting guards of each NBA team for the 2023-2024 season. This ranking is based both on each player’s individual talent as well as their fit on their respective teams.

Please keep in mind that some teams have traditional point guards playing the shooting guard position on their roster. I will be using the official positions listed on ESPN’s depth charts to determine which player will be labeled as a shooting guard and some players may end up having multi-position eligibility (PG/SG or SG/SF) for fantasy purposes.

With that being said, let’s get straight into the list. There is a lot of talent that needs to be covered!

The Bottom Third (21-30)

30. Gary Harris - Orlando Magic

Harris has struggled as a starter for the Orlando Magic, averaging only single-digit points and not much else. A positive to his game is that he shoots the 3-ball very well at 43.1%, showing potential for him to be a floor-spacer. However, he needs to make significant improvements to his game if he wants to move from the bottom of this list.

29. Josh Richardson - Miami Heat

There isn’t much to say about Josh Richardson. He is a well-rounded player, an above-average 3-point shooter, and a solid defender, but his contributions to his team make it difficult to move him up higher on this list. Next season, he will be playing with the Miami Heat and looking to fill in the gaps of Max Strus and Gabe Vincent.

28. Quentin Grimes - New York Knicks

Grimes is a player who has flown under the radar of most fans, but last year, he showed significant improvement in his offensive game.

In addition, he has shown his defensive prowess, making clutch stops on some of the league’s best offensive players such as Jimmy Butler. If he continues on this trajectory, he can become a valuable asset to the Knicks’ lineup.

27. Grayson Allen - Milwaukee Bucks

Known for his gritty playstyle, Allen has also shown his potential to make significant contributions to the Bucks’ offense at times. Most notably, Allen has shot over 40% from 3-point range on 5.5 attempts during his tenure with the Bucks.

While not a star by any means, he is a solid shooting guard who will always make the hustle play.

26. Jaden Ivey - Detroit Pistons

With Cade Cunningham missing most of last season, Ivey had the perfect opportunity to adjust to the league and show what he’s got. His quick first step and ability to adjust at the rim made him a tough cover for any defender. With the Pistons picking up Ausar Thompson in the 2023 draft, Ivey will be able to develop with a young core that looks to do some damage in years to come.

25. Bennedict Mathurin - Indiana Pacers

Mathurin has had a strong start to his career and proved to be one of the best rookies last year. Although he isn’t flashy or explosive, his smooth game and solid fundamentals allow him to score at ease.

Alongside Haliburton, he will continue to develop and potentially be part of a dynamic duo in the near future.

24. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope - Denver Nuggets

Caldwell-Pope was a crucial part of the Nuggets' offense last year, shooting a career-high 42.3% from behind the arc last year. The spacing that he provides allows Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray to freely operate and break down the defense. Coming off a championship, Caldwell-Pope looks to support his team with his superb 3-point shooting and help them win another title.

23. Kevin Huerter - Sacramento Kings

As a catch-and-shoot specialist with the likes of Kyle Korver, Huerter provides great spacing which facilitates the Kings’ offense. His ability to catch fire at any time propelled his team to the third seed last season after not making the playoffs for the past 16 years. If Huerter continues to excel at his role, we can expect the Kings in a similar position next season.

22. Devin Vassell - San Antonio Spurs

On a developing Spurs team, Vassell has emerged as the primary scorer. With a combination of crafty moves and tough jump shots, he was able to average 18.5 PTS for his squad last year.

The Spurs look to continue rebuilding with the addition of Victor Wembanyama, and Vassell can be a focal point of that process for years to come.

21. Austin Reaves - Los Angeles Lakers

Reaves had an incredible season last year. While he only averaged 13 points, he averaged an efficient 52.9 FG%, demonstrating his reliability for the Lakers squad. Furthermore, he played a huge role in the Lakers’ postseason success. While he can still work on his defense and playmaking, the potential he has shown us in just his second year is indicative of a bright future.

The Middle of the Pack (11-20)

20. O.G. Anunoby - Toronto Raptors

Anunoby is a great two-way player for the Raptors. As the third scoring option last year, he was able to average 16.8 points, and he led the league in steals last year with 1.9 steals. With Fred VanVleet now on the Rockets, we can expect Anunoby to contribute even more on the offensive end.

19. Jordan Clarkson - Utah Jazz

In his first season as a starter with the Jazz, Clarkson was able to solidify himself as the team’s second scoring option behind All-Star Lauri Markannen.  In addition, he significantly improved his facilitating ability, averaging almost double the assists compared to last season. If he can improve his consistency, he will be a reliable asset for the Jazz.

18. Jalen Green - Houston Rockets

Green is an extremely athletic guard who also possesses the skills necessary to score at all three levels. With his talent, he was already able to average 22.1 PTS in just his second season.

While he does struggle with efficiency and turnovers, he can certainly improve these aspects of his game over time.

17. Terry Rozier - Charlotte Hornets

Rozier is a high-volume scorer who can make big-time shots when necessary. However, he struggled last year with his efficiency as the primary scorer with LaMelo Ball out. With the Hornets’ young guard returning next year, Rozier looks to bounce back as one of the team’s primary scorers.

16. Desmond Bane - Memphis Grizzlies

A key component of the Grizzlies’ young core, Bane has propelled his team to playoff success with his sharpshooting. Last year, he averaged 21.5 points per game on 40.8 3FG%, making him someone no team can leave open. As he and the Grizzlies continue to grow together, they hope to inch closer and closer to their championship dreams.

15. Josh Giddey - Oklahoma City Thunder

Giddey makes it seem easy to fill up the stat sheet, as he became the youngest player to record a triple-double last year. His playstyle isn’t flashy, but he knows how to get things done. Considering that he and his squad are still extremely young, they could be a problem for the league in years to come.

14. Anfernee Simons - Portland Trail Blazers

Watching Anfernee Simons play is like seeing a baby Damian Lillard on the court. He has already incorporated some aspects of Lillard’s game into his own, including an elite three-point-making ability and tough drives to the bucket. If Lillard gets traded this season, Simons will most likely take the lead for the Blazers, but for now, he is still a solid guard with incredible potential.

13. Jordan Poole - Washington Wizards

The Poole era is officially over in Golden State, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing for the rising star. Although he may not be winning a title with the WIzards, his starting role will allow him to fully develop his game. And based on the flashes we’ve seen from him, this could be a scary prospect for the rest of the league.

12. Tyrese Maxey - Philadelphia 76ers

Despite only going into his fourth year, Maxey has already proven to be a rising star with a lot of potential. He struggles with consistency at times, but his performance during playoffs shows he can step up in big moments.

He looks to continue developing his game while helping the 76ers reach the playoffs in what may be one of the final years of the Harden-Embiid era.

11. Dejounte Murray - Atlanta Hawks

Murray is a great two-way player whose quickness helps him on both sides of the court. While his incredible change of pace makes it difficult to stay in front of him, his quick hands allow him to force turnovers at a high rate. He had a fairly productive season last year with the Hawks and hopes to continue his success next year.

The Cream of the Crop (1-10)

10. Mikal Bridges - Brooklyn Nets

Bridges has always been a solid player for the Suns, but now that he is the first option for the new-look Brooklyn Nets, he will have the opportunity to fully showcase his skills. After being traded last season, he averaged over 26 points per game. It’s still too early to tell if this level of play will carry over next year, but the production we saw from him last year puts him among the top 10 shooting guards.

9. Paul George - Los Angeles Clippers

Riddled with injuries the past couple of seasons, George has struggled with consistently performing at a high level. He has shown flashes of his old self last season, but it was nowhere near enough to give the Clippers championship hopes. If he and Kawhi Leonard can string together a healthy season, the Clippers may have a good shot at a deep playoff run.

8. Brandon Ingram - New Orleans Pelicans

Ingram has been flying under the radar recently, but he has still been quietly putting up 24 points per game. While not the most athletic player, his lankiness and pace make him a deadly scorer at all three levels. Hopefully, if Zion returns healthy next year, Ingram can use his skills to make a push for the playoffs.

7. Zach LaVine - Chicago Bulls

LaVine has proven long ago that he is more than just a high flyer. His athleticism helps him finish over big defenders while his quick release makes his three-point shot impossible to guard. While the Bulls have been floundering in the middle of the Eastern Conference standings since Lonzo Ball’s injury, LaVine’s excellent scoring ability has remained constant.

6. Anthony Edwards - Anthony Edwards

Putting Edwards so high on this list might be controversial, especially since he is going into just his fourth year. However, over his first three seasons, he has shown significant and consistent improvement in his game, and his amazing performance with Team USA at the FIBA World Cup is a testament to that. Expect him to make another big step in his progress this year and prove why he’s already one of the best guards in the league.

5. Jaylen Brown - Boston Celtics

Expectations are high for Brown next year, especially after he signed the largest contract in NBA history. He has undoubtedly been crucial to the Celtics’ success over the past couple of years, but if they want to win it all, they will need him to bring even more to the table. Brown has already proven to be one of the league’s best scorers, so I’m excited to see how he can further elevate his game in years to come.

4. Kyrie Irving - Dallas Mavericks

While his off-court shenanigans have drawn a lot of controversy around him, there is no doubt that Irving is among the most skilled players on this list. However, the struggles the Mavericks had last season after trading for him certainly raises some eyebrows about his fit with the team.

If he can figure things out with Luka Doncic and the supporting cast, the Mavericks can be a dangerous threat to other Western Conference powerhouses next year.

3. Donovan Mitchell - Cleveland Cavaliers

After being traded to the Cavaliers last season, Mitchell has elevated his game. He averaged 28.3 poinyd, the highest of his career, including a 71-point double-double.

With a strong young core surrounding him, Mitchell was able to lead the Cavaliers to the 4th seed last year. They just need a couple of years of development and playoff experience to become serious title contenders.

2. Devin Booker - Phoenix Suns

Booker has established himself as one of the league’s best pure scorers, able to whittle down opponents’ defense with tough jumpers. He also has playoff experience under his belt, including an incredible run last year where he averaged 33.7 points during the postseason, but they, unfortunately, ended up short. However, with Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal now on his squad, he hopes to turn things around this season.

1. Stephen Curry - Golden State Warriors

When talking about the players with the greatest longevity, Curry’s name needs to start being in that conversation. Entering his 15th season, he’s shown no signs of slowing down, as he just averaged 29.4 points last season in 56 games. It’ll be no surprise if he continues his stellar play while leading the Warriors to another deep playoff run.
