Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz was the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles made a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Browns to secure the quarterback.

The former North Dakota State star had a solid rookie season. However, Wentz became an MVP candidate the following year. The star quarterback had 3,296 passing yards and 33 touchdowns in 2017. He finished second in passing touchdowns that year despite missing three games. More importantly, Wentz was the MVP favorite before suffering a torn ACL.

While he played well over the next two seasons, the star quarterback started to struggle in 2020. That year Wentz had only 16 passing touchdowns but led the NFL with 15 interceptions. However, the former MVP candidate didn’t have a single pass catcher with over 540 receiving yards that year. Then, Wentz got traded to the Indianapolis Colts in the offseason.

What Did Carson Wentz Accomplish in 2022?

The former North Dakota State star had a solid 2021 season, throwing 27 touchdowns compared to only seven interceptions. However, the Colts decided to trade Wentz to the Washington Commanders in the offseason for a pair of third-round draft picks.

Wentz played well to start the year in Washington, throwing seven touchdowns in the first two games. He also had 650 passing yards and three interceptions in those contests.

Unfortunately, the defense struggled when the veteran quarterback was under center. They surrendered 21 or more points in all but one of his seven starts. By comparison, the defense gave up only 18.4 points per game when Taylor Heinicke and Sam Howell started, surrendering more than 21 points only twice. Furthermore, Wentz averaged more passing yards and touchdowns per game than Heinicke last season.

Which Teams Could Sign Carson Wentz?

The Commanders released Wentz earlier this offseason, saving over $20 million in salary cap space. Washington instead signed Jacoby Brissett in free agency to compete with Howell for the starting job in 2023.

While many quarterbacks signed new deals in free agency, Wentz remains on the open market. There are a few potential starting spots available. The New York Jets could sign the quarterback if the Aaron Rodgers trade talks fall apart. However, a more likely landing spot is the Arizona Cardinals.

Kyler Murray suffered a torn ACL last year and will likely miss part of the 2023 season. While Colt McCoy is under contract, Wentz would be an upgrade. Reportedly, McCoy is dealing with an unspecified injury that will limit him this offseason.
