William Byron narrowly missed out on the front row by qualifying third for the Ruoff Mortgage 500. Byron turned in a lap of 27.216 seconds. Byron's car was fastest in a couple of the sectors but seemed to back off a bit around Turn 4. That was just enough of a difference. The No. 24 Chevy has had a mixed history at Phoenix but does have three top-tens in his last six races (a 14.17 average result). Testing back in January did reveal the Hendrick cars to be the best on longer runs. If there are a few less cautions on Sunday, we may find out if Byron can truly contend and win or just contend. --Chris Wassel - RotoBaller
