Daily Slivers of the Fantasy Soapbox - Yesterday's Recap

Ellis Canady reviews last night's MLB box scores (6/28) and provides fun opinions on a variety of topics to help fantasy baseball owners with their lineups.

Welcome to the Saturday, June 29th edition of Daily Slivers of the Fantasy Soapbox.

Discussing baseball is as fun as the game itself. It has a way of bringing people together to share different opinions about the sport we all love. A similar action can be done with fantasy baseball where we not only discuss topics but also look to improve our teams as well as the teams of our fellow fantasy baseball enthusiasts. Everyone has their own perspectives which are not to be cast off as frivolous. They should be used as a method of expanding our own knowledge.

In this article, I review the previous day's boxscores and provide my opinion on a variety of topics. Some will be random, some will be fun, and some will be stat-driven. It's a soapbox so I may rant from time to time as well. So without any further delay, below are my thoughts on June 29th. Enjoy them. You can even respond with your own thoughts on Twitter @EllisCan2.

Daily Musings

  • That’s two bad starts for Mike Clevinger since IL. (1.2IP, 7ER, 3BB, 2K). Confident about KC next? Me either.
  • Chance Sisco brings the BASS! HR(three), five RBI; AVG now at .289. Needs more playing time.
  • B-A-N-A-N-A-S! Lourdes Gurriel Jr. w/two more HR(14) & .309AVG (.346BABIP). Somehow he’s making it work w/chase (35.5%), contact (69.4%), and swinging strike (14.3%) rates.
  • Joey Votto w/4-for-4 game, SB. ‘Decline Phase’ Votto not playing around.
  • Nick Senzel w/eighth SB. YES! Two straight games. Don’t stop now.
  • Elieser Hernandez making Phillies look silly. 5.2IP, 2ER, 7K. No easier w/Nats next.
  • Lance Lynn masterful w/scoreless 8IP, 10K. 4.00ERA, 2.92FIP. Matched win total for 2018(10). Career year on the way.
  • Just a quick check-in. Yep, Ji-Man Choi still lagging. 3HR, .191AVG in 15 days. Any sign of Nate Lowe? (2% owned). Keep an eye out.
  • Yonny Chirinos a little wild in loss w/6IP, 3ER, 4BB, 5K. Hosting O’s next might help him get recalibrated. I’m in.
  • Nick Castellanos sighting w/first HR(eight) in 14 games. Trade deadline around the corner. The second half could be a bounce-back.
  • You’re a sneaky one. Victor Robles w/10SB. Bringing you value any way possible.
  • He has similar K-rate(33%) to Joey Gallo(35%), but that is about where the comparison ends for now. Gallo has 20.3%BB, 22.5%Chase, and a 14.9%SwingStrike rates, whereas he has a 4.8%BB, 42.7%Chase(near the worst of the league), & 20.3%SwingStrike rates. Austin Riley is no Joey Gallo…at this moment.
  • Peter Alonso blessings continue w/28th HR. Clear lead in RoY campaign. Austin Riley did lob a 407-footer for his 13th tater.
  • Mike Soroka did allow the Alonso blessing but got the last laugh w/W (9-1), 6.1IP, 2ER, 4K in his bid to stay RoY relevant.
  • Don’t be a name-brand snob. Oooh, I got this Louis Vuitton bag, this Rolex watch, these Jimmy Choo shoes. You may think you need a Fendi bag(& a bad attitude) to get you in a good mood. You don’t. Similarly, you don’t need Robinson Cano. He’s just a name until he fixes things (.227AVG, 50%GB, 38%Chase). You’re better off playing matchups.
  • You got Yuli Gurriel as a late-round option for his batting average stability. Currently at .267 (w/eight HR). He’s picking it up over the last two weeks (.313AVG).
  • James McCann w/ninth HR, .327AVG, continues to be a source of sunshine on a weak roster. Eloy Jimenez w/13th HR provides some Sunny D of his own.
  • Felipe Vázquez w/two-inning W. Pleasant surprise. Now back to our savings, please.
  • Hyun-Jin Ryu not immune to Coors (4IP, 7ER, 4K). Ouch! That’s a gut punch.
  • Alex Verdugo w/back-to-back HR games. Two more games in Colorado & only 31% owned. C’mon people.
  • Five HR in seven games is impressive. Despite the extended missed time, Matt Olson is already at 16.
  • Mike Fiers (w/W; 8-3), you have been efficient. 4.01ERA(4.90FIP) & 8.7%K-BB leaves a lot to be desired.
  • Combo meal for Fernando Tatis Jr. Now a part of the 10HR/12SB club.
  • Kirby Yates extends SV lead to 27. Padres still in it = he stays.
  • Enjoy your Friday baseball. Slide into the weekend the right way.
  • No Fear, Just Fantasy.
