3 weeks agoThe current Cup Series points leader, Martin Truex Jr., will start this week's Cook Out 400 from the fourth position. This is his highest start position of the season yet for Truex at one of his most successful tracks in Cup history. In 36 starts at Martinsville, Truex has three wins and 16 top-10 finishes, including three top-5 finishes in the last six Cup events there. After seven races so far this season, Truex placed in the Top 15 in every race with four top-10 finishes. Truex also led multiple laps in all short-track races and has the best average finish of all drivers so far this year (8.1). In practice, Truex ranked 12th of all drivers in overall lap averages as one of the faster Group A drivers. Considering his past success at Martinsville and how great he is at short tracks this season so far, Truex is one of the top drivers to consider for the win.

3 weeks agoIn qualifying for this week's Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway, Daniel Suarez nabbed a starting position of 21st. This will mark Suarez's fourth start of the year of 20th or worse in 2024. In 14 races at Martinsville, Suarez has six top-20 finishes, including two of the last three Cup events at the Virginia track. After seven races so far this year, Suarez has one win and four top-20 finishes, including Phoenix and Bristol. In practice, Suarez's practice times ranked around the middle of the pack, with his overall lap average being 20th. Considering his salary range for DFS, Suarez is one of the more favorable options to finish in the Top 20 based on equipment and results at short tracks this season.

3 weeks agoHendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson won the pole for this week's Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway. This is the second consecutive pole of the year as well as the fourth of his career at Martinsville. In 18 races at Martinsville, Larson has one win, six top-10 finishes, and is the defending winner of this weekend's Cup event. Larson also led multiple laps in three of his last five Cup starts at MS while placing sixth or better in the last three. In seven races so far this year, Larson has one win and three top-5 finishes, including Bristol and Richmond. In practice, Larson was one of the fastest cars of Group B, had the best 25 and 30 consecutive lap averages, and ranked 11th of all drivers in overall lap averages (second-best of Group B drivers). With top-notch equipment, strong performances at short tracks this year, and practice speeds faster than most, watch for Larson to be one of the top favorites for the win.

3 weeks agoCorey LaJoie will start 32nd in this week's Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway. This is LaJoie's worst start of the season since Phoenix where he started 35th. In 12 races at Martinsville, LaJoie has two top-20 finishes, which he last scored in 2020. The driver of the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet has eight finishes with a positive place differential in his Cup career at Martinsville, including both races at the site last year. Through seven races so far this season, LaJoie has two top-20 finishes and three finishes with positive PD. In practice, LaJoie had the fastest single-lap time and ranked as one of the top 10 fastest drivers in all eligible categories in practice. Although Martinsville is not one of LaJoie's top tracks for scoring a high finish, his starting position sets him up as a likable DFS option with upside and cap flexibility. Considering his equipment and track history, look for LaJoie to compete for a top-25 finish at Martinsville.

3 weeks agoRoss Chastain captured a starting position of 12th for this week's Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway. 12th is Chastain's second-highest Martinsville starting position in his Cup career and will mark the fourth time this season that he will start from the Top 15. In 10 Martinsville Cup races, Chastain has four top-15 finishes, all of which he scored in his last four races there. Through seven races so far this season, Chastain is one of the models of consistency with six top-15 finishes, including four inside the Top 10. In practice, Chastain's speeds were among the middle of the pack in his group, while his overall lap average ranked 32nd of all drivers. Despite the favorable recent Martinsville history and consistency during this season, Chastain is a driver who should be rostered in DFS with caution due to his equipment through pre-race events.

This marks his fourth consecutive top-5 starting position at Martinsville and his highest overall for 2024 so far. Martinsville is one of Briscoe's best tracks statistically, as he has four top-10 finishes in six Cup starts at the site, including top-5 finishes in both of last year's races. After seven races so far this season, Briscoe has four top-15 finishes, including Phoenix and Bristol, the former of which uses the same rules package as Martinsville this week. Briscoe was one of the fastest drivers in practice, as he ranked first in 20 consecutive lap averages and overall lap averages. With his starting position close to the front, Briscoe does not offer much place differential upside this week for DFS. Considering his recent Martinsville history and equipment through pre-race events, however, Briscoe makes for a tournament play that fantasy players must not underestimate this week.

3 weeks agoOn Saturday evening, Bubba Wallace qualified second for the Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway. Despite not really being known as a short-track racer, Wallace has been solid at this track since the launch of the Next Gen Car in 2022. Over the four races in this car at this venue, the eight-year Cup veteran has an average finish of 11th and an average DraftKings score of 39.26 points, which is 10th best in the series. While these results are certainly not dominant, they are solid, especially given that his salary is just $7,700 on DraftKings this weekend. Given that he is starting up front, Wallace is certainly capable of racking up lead laps early in this race, which would give him some cushion if he were to finish worse than where he started. Although we would not recommend going overweight on the 23XI star, his recent success at this track and the opportunity he has to earn lead lap points make him a driver you should have some exposure to in DFS this weekend.

3 weeks agoAfter posting the seventh fastest practice time (20.141), Todd Gilliland improved slightly during qualifying by posting a time of 19.921, which was fast enough to earn the 16th starting position for the Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway. Entering this weekend, Gilliland has just one top-20 finish this season and currently sits 26th in the NASCAR playoff standings. While fans of the second-generation Cup driver are waiting anxiously for a breakthrough performance from the young driver, don't expect that performance to come this weekend at Martinsville. Although he won the 2019 Truck Series race at this track, his DFS numbers over his four Cup starts are not impressive, and this is with a top-10 in one of these races. In his four Cup starts, Gilliland has averaged just 19.24 DraftKings points, which ranks 24th among full-time drivers in the series. Even with a 50% increase in production, which would place him at 28.86 points, he would still fall below value on his $6,200 salary, making it hard to justify playing him in DFS this weekend.
